2021/22 Anthony Gordon

My main concern is when DCL comes back and he might get dropped to the bench and how he will handle it.

DCL
Richarlison
Gray - Allan/new CM - Doucoure - Townsend/Gordon

I like him. It’s worth at least giving him some time and see what happens
I want to like him but so far I’ve not seen much to suggest he should be anywhere near our starting 11 - good news for him is that places him amongst a significant portion of our squad.
If he gets dropped when we have everyone fit, it’s because he’s not good enough to displace the mediocrity in front of him.
Still has time on his side, but without showing enough now, I fear his destiny is to be a run of the mill Prem or decent Champ player

My memory isn’t what it used to be, so correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t recall him doing a single noteworthy thing yet. He’s always going to have “he’s a blue and runs his socks off” going for him but we know that’s not good enough.

Never been sold on Davies and not sold on this boy either. We need to be more ruthless with the academy players. Get rid for small fees to Champo teams and use the pennies to bring in some other youth candidates.

Who knows if he’ll make the grade but right now he offers work ethic, pace and directness and aside from Gray and at times when he carries the ball, Richarlison, we don't really have anyone else who can do that.

He probably does get dropped when DCL is back but we're going to need to rotate over xmas and he's shown he can be reied upon defensively and can press

Really needs a goal, maybe he'll get the winner v Leicester

I think this run in the team will have done him the world of good, and has established him as a 1st team player. He is getting more physical now too which is good. Hes actually quite tall. You hope he keeps filling out a bit.

The next stage for him will be having the confidence to get shots off. I like him anyway.

Well hes certainly had a couple of assists.

If he comes good he will be worth a lot of money. I'm not sure I see any point of selling him for a small fraction of that, when he has proven to be a viable first team player.

There have been more than 1 game this season where he has arguably been our best player too.

At times this year I don’t think being our best player in a given match amounts to much!

Do you think he’d get in (and do well for) another PL team?

2 fair points mate.

On the question, it's hard to say isnt it? I think a few would give him time as a 20/21 year old. I mean hes playing for us partially because of injuries. I hope he will keep kicking on. I think hes getting better, but would be good to see some more end product from him.

He’s come into the team at a very difficult time and played pretty well I’ve thought. Defensively and work rate wise he’s upped it massively. When he first turned up he showed he can take people on and had a decent strike on him. Suspect with more games, in a side with more confidence, he’ll be a good player for us.

He’s average. When you compare him to similarly aged players in his position at other clubs like Saka, Greenwood, Hudson-Odoi, ett., he’s just not close to that unfortunately.

Hudson odoi has flattered to deceive a long side world class players, 4 goals in 62 games. greenwood is a striker really, but a class act , Saka is very talented, again the London bias has pushed him to a level in the medias eyes, he probably hasn’t reached yet.

It’s like Curtis Jones, the lads a good player, but after 10 games it was the usual talk of him getting in the England squad.

Gordon will have to do a lot more on the pitch than. The ones mentioned just be talked about in the same breath.

I think thats more to do with the way the club progress's these lads ( & more in particular Unsworth ) rather than the talent they possess.
It took beards for DCL to realise his potential.
Real propper coaching would bring these lads on much quicker.
Good kid is Gordon.

It’s always tough with young players. On the one hand I think that players that are going to be exceptional (and I realise we don’t necessarily need him to be that) have shown glimpses by 20/21.

Different positions but he’s so much like Davies, for me, in that I couldn’t really tell you what type of player he is. He’s not a proper speed demon, nor is he super skilful; he’s not a chalky booted winger or a cut inside and shoot style wide player. That’s why I find it hard to picture him in any other PL team.

Of course, you could be right, though, and I hope you are. One thing I’m certain of is we need some managerial stability so lads like him know what’s expected of them in the medium term and can work towards meeting those expectations in a familiar setup/style of play. Fingers crossed for the boy. It’d be nice to have our own local success story.
