Antolin Alcaraz

I think if Martinez plays with 3 centre backs, then Duffy will get a chance over the course of a season, because even with Alcaraz, we would only have 5 CB, not counting the other youth players

In some ways it reminds me of the signing of Nuno, an experienced defender who could slot in easily, with a good idea of how to play football.

The odds are that Duffy isn't going to make it with us. He is one of those players who needs to play week in, week out at a lower level to gain the experience to compensate for some significant limitations. He has no pace. He is not particularly good in possession. His concentration wanders.

On the plus side, he loves to defend, is brave, physical, committed and has a bit about him as a leader. He could develp into a solid "basic" CB who can get a few goals. Given we finished 6th in the PL I'd say even with that potential realised he'd probably have to settle for only being a squad filler for us even then.

There is enough to build on so I'd try and get him out on loan for a season to a decent championship side but I believe he was very frustrated under Moyes and may ask for a transfer rather than accept a loan deal.

The bottom line is that Alcaraz is several steps above the lad today and hence signing him on a free (done by Tuesday or Wednesday is the rumour) makes the squad better.

Being hard-nosed RM may conclude that it is best for everyone if Duffy moves on providing we get a few £ and a sell-on.

Excellent post which hits the nail on head. Well done sir!

John Terry?

Good shout. I do think hell be a lot more useful than Nuno personally but I know where you're coming from, he was an accomplished technical player who gave us a few decent performances and a lot of solid ones

Wigan conceded more goals than any other side in the league last season alongside reading

Why on earth would you want one of their defenders!?!?

Oh yeh it's everton that's why

He made 8 PL apps last season because of a serious injury. He's a good player, especially on a free.

Not that he's on a free no

But if he was that decent someone would have taken him by now surely. Good players don't stay out of contract for long

I still don't see your point. We've been in talks to signing him for a while, Martinez has only been in the job a week.

Just because he is out of contract doesn't mean it will take 2 minutes for him to sign. He'll be weighing up offers from different clubs.

with reports saying his work permit has been cleared and kone has passed a medical we're surely going to see a 'double transfer swoop' announcement soon. Both good signings but I think there's still funds (without sales) for a really good midfield player.

That second line is worded very strangely for a fellow blue.

Apparently he is a defender I don't remeber ever seeing him play so I wouldn't know but I do respect some people's opinions on here and they think for a free he's good and that's good enuff for me.

Tbh am kinda bored of getting out raged by players who Martinez is supposedly getting in. At the end of the day Martinez knows a lot more about football then any of us know and anyone he dose bring in will be for the benifit of the club so am just going to wait till they sign and support them 100%.

Although just because am supporting them doesn't mean am going to be excited about any of them.
