Wigan conceded more goals than any other side in the league last season alongside reading

Why on earth would you want one of their defenders!?!?

Oh yeh it's everton that's why
if you speak to wigan fans they say the defence was ten times better when he was in it, he really tightened them up. They had a lot of problems when he was injured. he is also a very good footballer with the ball and I think we need that at centre half. I hope we get him.

He played the full 90 minutes in their 4-0 home loss to blackpool, 4-2 away loss to sunderland, 4-1 home loss to sunderland, 3-1 away loss to wolves, a 4-0 loss to liverpool, a 4-1 to arsenal, two 5-0s to Man U and a 6-0 to chelsea.

Fair enough he didn't play much last year, but he was part of a defence that would get hammered reguarly.

When a team gets relegated there are problems all over the field, the team isn't making chances the midfield isn't covering the defence. It just means that overall the squad of players isn't good enough ,it doesn't mean that there aren't really good individual players within the squad, remember Sheff. Utd and Jagielka.

Surely we can get someone else on a free who wouldn't cost as much in wages, who hadn't been part of one of the most laughable defences in Premier League history?

He didn't play for Sunderland?

You have to wonder where exactly the problems were with Wigan. Not the manager (Martinez) obviously because he's going to make us better, not the central defender (Alcaraz) he's going to improve us, not the goalkeeper (Robles) he'll improve us, not the main striker (Kone), not the second striker (Di Santo), not the defensive midfielder (McCarthy), not the winger (McManaman) and not the central midfielder (McArthur). Given that this forum assurers that all these players would improve the 6th best team in the league and would do better in a better team, you can only assume that the remaining 4 players must be actively working against them.

Of course there are good players at relegated clubs.

The likes of Jagielka have come in and proven that.

However Jagielka was a 23/24 year old with a decent reputation when we signed him.

My issue is, once again, this is a short term signing. If he were 23/24 years old I'd support the signing but the guy will be 32 soon and has never been anything other than OK. Very limited potential to improve. He'll offer cover but I'd much rather be bringing in a younger player who could grow to become a first teamer for the next decade.

Wigan's problem was their defense organisation and sadly the blame for that lies with our new coaching staff. Having seen wigan on MOTD they seem to boss a lot of games not able to score then shoot themselves in the foot.
