Confirmed Signing Anwar El Ghazi

This blocking minutes for Gordon nonsense is utter nonsense. Also worth noting that it's only under king Rafael that Gordon has finally started showing what he'd capable of more consistently.

If you look at his appearances this season though he's only really started due to someone being out. With DCL out, Richy went up top so Gordon came in with Gray and Townsend. Same when Richy was out with Rondon up top.

When DCL, Richy, Gray & Townsend have been on the pitch together (4 games) he's only got 1 minute of play time. Even after that he was having Iwobi picked over him till United game.

It's a valid concern that he's going to end up 3rd/4th choice when everyone is available.

which would be perverse management - he's just demonstrated we do not need to spend money on there, so it can be spent on the gaping hole that is midfield

instead we are buying / loaning a winger

True and it wouldn't shock me. We saw after the Chelsea game how he only picks kids out of sheer desperation mostly. Playing Gordon on form but also to appease the fans a little. He needs every little win he can get so carrying on picking Iwobi instead would have been suicide.

Loaning a winger when we have injured players up front - we can push Gray inside and use him to lead the attack if DCL and Richarlison dont show up soon AND we have him to stand in for players who have played a lot of game time: Townsend has broken down once and Gordon shouldn't be playing every game.

It leaves us with the El Khazi cash to get players in for other positions.

It's shrewd.

Players can be loads of crap as long as its just a loan and it doesnt cost much. Signing players on permanent deals that are crap are the issue. I cant think of a single team that struggled just because their 1-2 players on loan werent very good. Stop pretending every signing has to be a Richy maybe? Thats the same arguement thats been made for loads of players who have turned out to be great assets though isnt it. They arent world beaters and so they dont have any value, and so we shouldnt sign the likes of Grey.
I don't know what point you're making here. My point is a very simple one - i don't want to see the squad filled up with average to below average players who don't make us substantially better. Rondon Townsend El Ghazi Longstaff all seem to fit into that for me i've said a few times now it feels like kicking the can down the road just killing time until our chickens come home to roost and I don't like it. Gray was always going to be at the very worst an OK signing because of the cost involved because even if he hadn't made an impact we'd have probably been able to sell him at a profit so not sure why people bring him up.

So basically some people haven't seen him play but he's not good enough for them.

Yeah Dave :coffee:
I dont give a flying one what they think about anything.

The doubts cast over Patterson are on the basis of him being seen.

You jumped in too soon on Gordon. The smart thing to do was wait.

As an example: I've seen Patterson play and that's why I make my projections he'll be a defensive catastrophe here. I think you should have held fire on Gordon until you'd seen more of him.

I hope you found this informative and that it helps.

This is a Benitez signing (Patterson). I know it will be a poor use of cash for what we need right now: a defender who can defend.

As said. Strike One.

I've seen him play. He's good going forward but an embarrassment in defence.

Faroe Islands ripped him a new one...THE FAROE ISLANDS.

I've seen Patterson play.

Hpeless defender.

I'm glad Kenny played lasst night, because the last thing we needed was Patterson at RB getting steamrollered.

He will be because Patterson is an appalling defender.

Kenny will offer better defensive qualities than that lad.

You really are in for an eye opener.

Yeah but I think he's earned his place now since he's stepped up. Khazi is a temporary squad filler. No complaints from me. Good to be able to mix things up off the bench if required. A 5 month loan is nothing to get upset about. If khazi is rubbish and is taking Gordons place being rubbish then I'll moan. Until then it's hardly 30m on iwobi stuff. Nothing to get upset about.

Looking at the squad then:

LW - Gray, Gordon
RW - El Ghazi, Townsend

ST: DCL, Richarlison, Rondon

Not great but not disastrous either considering our financial situation.

Remember the days of signing Darron Gibson and Magueye Gueye - could be worse.
Gibson actually gave us some decent performances. Think we had a really solid run being unbeaten in games he played. And yeah, the front line looks decent but we don’t have anyone currently capable of actually getting them the ball. Doesn’t do much good if the 8 behind them can’t play.

Its the same argument that has been made for loads of players who've turned out to be crap though isn't it. Rondon being the most recent example. Being slightly less crap than someone we all agree is crap doesn't make you a good signing. Thats not to say he can't turn out alright though and if anyone was saying i've seen a lot of him and he's exactly what we need because he can do all these things then I would be happy but the only positive thing anyone seems to be able to say relates to Iwobi who hardly plays anyway.
Rondon is the only other one
