Well its not my landlords fault. I have reported it to him, but he's about to be stung by a completely new central heating system - so I don't want to burden him to much at the moment, hence why I want to sort it myself.

Also add that our landlords are my wife's best friend, so I'm kind of on the understanding side of the fence.

My level though is at wiring a plug. So if its the same process than I'm happy to take a shot at it. Obviously I will turn off the electrics first.

its defo a landlords responsability to sort it out.
its a 2 minute job and wont cost much at all and will save the landlord money in the long run if it prevents the house from burning down.

the red (live)and black (neutral)wires are from the mains.
the green is the 'earth'

on the lamp cord the blue is the neutral , the brown is (live)

blue is neutral and 'should' connect to the black wires!

For single phase installations:
Blue connects to black (neutral)
Brown connects to red (live)
There are exceptions to this in parts of domestic lighting circuits, especially the wires to/from switches, so be careful.

Green/yellow is always Earth.

dont be a tart, take the light off completely, check wires are trimmed back, then reconnect as said.

so that blue is making continuity with black, and the brown wire is connected to the reds.

put a saucepan on your head, cower, and switch on!
