Ghost, don't feel too bad.

I don't have the first clue about this sort of thing so I'd probably end up calling someone who does to come fix it.

Get a qualified sparky to fix it Ghost!

Goin' by what been written on the subject, you'd end doin' the 240 shuffle.

I have a problem with gas, but I'm not gonna ask anyone about it.:D

can it really take einstein very long to find a 'house hold electricals forum'?

Yes, but...

... having been in the same situation as Ghost recently the professional forums seem to be full of qualified sparkies saying (quite justifiably in my opinion) don't be an idiot and risk your life over a bit of wiring (because you have no idea of how non-obvious things like impedance, arcing and resistance work).

Generally I've tried to save up or manage the jobs to do with rewiring until I've got a few and then get someone in. (Mind you, I have got some fun wiring where all the wires are white...)

I Electrical training and that job should take about a minute.

Definitely dodgy craftsmenship.

But, when you were changing the bulb you could have actually pulled it free. Otherwise how would you have been able to see the wire and how did the cover come off the fitting?

That aside, the whole job looks messy. The whole thing is only secured to the ceiling by one screw looking at your pic. Illegal.

Cowboy work I am afraid Nick.

The cover was not on, its hanging down along the flex. So I may have pulled the wire out by changing the bulb - but I wasn't overly aggressive with it.
