A friend of mine in California is the daughter of an ex-Everton player. His name was Archibald (‘Archie’) Spaulding Lightbody.

I know it’s not a topical thread because he is in no way connected to our current Board or troubles ?. However, if anyone can shed any light on Archie’s Everton career and / or any personal memories, it would make some people very happy. The family’s ambition is visit Goodison Park one day.

Ta.
I think your lady friend wants to shag you. She's using your love of Everton to find a common ground and to get into your y-fronts.

Have you tried contacting the club and seeing whether they have a record of him?

I did Google him and found in on the US census in 1940. Born in England 1904. So it would have been 20s or 30s if he played for Everton.
Yes that’s him. Died in Newport Beach, California in 1975. I checked the usual past players sources while trying to help my friend. Hence this post on GOT.

Haha no not at all. I’m gathering he played in the 1920s-30s for us. Back then, if substitutes were used they weren’t recorded etc
I’ve looked through first team from 1917 to the 40’s No record of that name, including FA cup games . Nothing close to be honest mate .

I’ve got a couple of what they called programmes from around then , including a couple of reserve ones . I won’t get to them until next week though but I’ll have a look .

….sorry Evo, never heard of him. The only ex-Everton ‘Archie’ that springs to mind is Archie Styles, but I know his kids & I’m quite certain they still live in Liverpool.

I’d be surprised if Mr Lightbody ever played for Everton but you need to provide more information. How old is the daughter you know? Where was Archie from and when was he associated with the Toffees?

Perhaps he was a trialist or a youth player. Apologies.
Cheers @Eggs

His daughter is her 60s. I’m going to direct her to the Everton heritage society. I couldn’t find him on any of the usual first team records. So I’m sceptical myself. But there’s enough family stories about Arxhie playing for Everton for it to make sense.

From his birth year (1904) I guess he played 1920s-30s. Moved to the USA by 1940.

Thanks mate

I have a suspicion maybe the scenario is he may have kicked a ball in a youth team or even a reserve environment and perhaps , and this is meant respectfully, travelling halfway across the world he embellished his story when there was absolutely no way of checking !
