This type of cheating won’t be taken out of the game until it is punished in a meaningful way. The player should get a retrospective red card and be suspended for three weeks. If this was to happen when players attempt to cheat then we may see them standing up and trying to use their talent to win matches and not their dishonesty.
Arsenal and Arteta should make a public apology to the referee, to Everton and to football in general and give an undertaking their players won’t resort to cheating in what is meant to be sport. This would be a welcome if bold move but they are one of the elite six so it isn’t going to happen.
