At the moment the 3 centre mids (5-3-2/3-5-2) is out cause we don't have the right combination of CBs

There is no left footed CB in the squad, which imo is essential if your going to go with three.
And you they must be quick and better than good with their feet.
I would be throwing good cash at Nathan Ake (valued at 15 on transfermarket and might get for 25) at least to give the coach more options.

So it gets down to either 4 at the back and either a flat four or diamond in midfield.
We don't really have the quality of wingers and strikers that would take us anywhere using a flat four.
So the diamond seems logical system to go with and its not a bad place to start building from

The diamond is less rigid than you'd find in other formations in terms of not confining a player to a certain position.
For eg, a returning Vlasic could fit effectively into a number of places as back-up, or to where players hadn't cemented a position.

I'd reckon to get the best out of Scneiderlin you have to make his role straightforward.
The DM position in a 4-2-3-1 is a difficult and complex beast to master and relies a lot on what others are doing; your not just playing your game, your playing theirs as well.
At the bottom of the diamond the task is more simplified.
You have to defend the ball in the air in that position so that rules Gana out..

Depending on game plan you'd have to determine who are the strikers/forwards (2).
If you play to the counter I'd be going Richarlison.
Walcott's for me is not a midfielder in a diamond because he doesn't work hard enough in defence. I can't see him running box to box.
But may be effective up front partnering Rico. I'd question whether he's a good 'out' to go for in a counter transition though.
(Mahrez was a genius in that role)

I'd go with Tosun OR DCL if not playing the counter. But unsure of best partner. Vlasic could possibly be an option next season.

Anyway, apologies for long winded answer
Options for midfield in a diamond aren't that bad
bottom - scneiderlin
left - bernard, rico, dowell
right - davies, gana, gomes, sig
top - sig, bernard, gomes, dowell

As long as the L,R and Top work their....socks off as should be the Everton way, we have a much better chance with this than the current S.
And just don't thin we have the squad for anything else.
Whatever Silva does though, the way we play has to change.
Let me get this straight. You want to play a diamond in midfield with Schneiderlin at the base because he’s good in the air? Because that’s necessary in a diamond midfield? There’s no way to play a diamond without a player at the base that isn’t good in the air? I’m sorry, but that’s just silly. Regardless, any formation that atttenpts to accommodate Morgan Schneiderlin in any way isn’t the right formation for us, that I am confident of.

Behind that, you think Davies, Gana, or Sigurdsson would play on the right? Have any of those players EVER played on the right?

Even beyond that, Silva is going to play with 4 in the back, he’s going to counter as that’s pretty much what he does, and he’s going to play 3 in midfield. He might play with a 6, 8, and a 10, he might play with two more box to box players and a 10, but that’s what’s going to happen. So not sure why are even discussing it.

Even MORE beyond that, there are a TON of variants of any formation so to declare a diamond midfield any more difficult to master than a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3, which virtually every big team in the PL plays, is nuts. Cryuff played with a diamond all the time and it was absolutely every bit as difficult to play as Marco Silva’s counter attacking 4-2-3-1.

I feel like Cenk compliments Richarlison so I wouldn't be inclined to hook him out of the side yet, but if we're on about dropping him then it's a realistic toss up between Richarlison, Walcott, DCL, or Siggurdsson, right?

The most natural choice out of them is Richarlison as false 9 at the moment, but then I believe Walcott fancies himself as a striker however I'd have reservations. DCL really doesn't offer a lot and I'm not sure Siggurddson is mobile enough, although I think he's actually played in that position for us before and I don't remember it being a disaster (one of the European games? Maybe someone can help me).

Either way, the lack of clear alternatives to Cenk means it'll be Cenk again.

You know what I’m going to say it, I think we are going to win this tomorrow. Just got a feeling in my waters. Richie is going to be fired up and hopefully might see a bit of Mina.

It would be much appreciated if we at least kept the game open as a contest for the majority of it.

I'm sick to death of conceding early goals and/or quick goals in succession at places like this, and a week of anticipation destroyed within five minutes.

Of all the "Everton, that" feelings, those are the worst.

I feel like this game will be easier than previous ones, at least in terms of goal scoring chances. We do not have the quality to score against the teams that park the bus but I think we will find loads of space that Walcott and Richarlison could exploit against top 6. Cenk and Bernard/Siggy must really top their games and sync with the wingers.

Not sure about the defense though, if we do not concede silly goals in the early game, we will cause problems against Arsenal.

As long as they dont get any corners or free kicks in our half we will be fine. Just a case of how many of our chances we convert

It'll be a sickener tomorrow if we just put in the usual gutless performance against a good team.

We seem to make every game difficult. Doesn't matter who we're playing.

Agreed, I just don’t get how under 3 or 4 different managers over a fairly long period of time and with a high turnover of players we can consistently make it so bloody easy for some of these teams.

The amount of times we’ve made a crap team look like 2011 Barcelona and played so well to a good teams obvious strengths that they haven’t had get out of second gear is baffling. I’d get it if we’d had Moyes for the past 15 or so years but under this many managers it’s just plain weird
