Sevilla are considering launching an audacious attempt to sign Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta.
Reports from Spain claim the La Liga side are willing to offer up to £12million for the Goodison talisman.
Sevilla have set their sights on Arteta to fill the creative hole left in the team by wingback Adriano, who joined Barcelona yesterday for £8m.
Arteta, who is currently on holiday after getting married last week, has made no secret of his desire to return to his homeland at some point in his career.
The 28-year-old has become in demand this summer, with Manchester City keeping close tabs on the Spanish schemer while Atletico Madrid are also mulling over a possible bid. Inaki Ibanez, Arteta’s representative, is quoted as saying in the Spanish press: “They (Everton) are asking for a lot of money, so it is difficult for Mikel to exit the club.”
Arteta missed the majority of last season as he recovered from a serious knee injury suffered in February 2009. However, he finished the campaign strongly with six goals in his last eight games as Everton narrowly missed out on Europa League qualification.
Losing confidence fast regarding being capable of retaining our little Spanish magician. I know it's only papertalk uptil this point, but why doesn't Arteta come out with a statement quashing these 'rumours', if there's no truth in it? He did it during all other transfer rumours in the past. Will be a hard blow dealt to all things Everton if he decides he wants to quit the Blues, but at the same time convinced that Davey Moyes will again manage to get us out of that situation. Hopefully Arteta comes to his senses though and remains at Goodison Park for a long time.
Does he really need to answer the rumors other than to assuage supporters? I think he'd be foolish to get out make any statement. Why scare off potential suitors? Simple rule - if someone comes to you with a job offer, you listen. You don't have to take it but you'd do yourself a disservice not to listen.
Everton will do a decent enough job of keeping potential suitors at bay with the valuation and holding firm and by leaning on the players (especially Cahill) to tug on his ear, if indeed it is open.
I agree its painful having Arteta be silent but I don't think he needs to come on out and make any statement when in all reality, the next contract he signs is his "gravy" contract - the most money he'll earn during his career and one that should cover the remainder of his truly effective playing days. He's not going to get a plum contract at 32 or 33 years of age. This is his last real jackpot chance and he and his agent know it.
Nah, of course he doesn't have to come out assuring supporters, just saying that he did all those times before. So, that makes me wonder what's so different this time around? Maybe this time the interest is more genuine, or he really does want out. I really do hate these ******* transfer windows.
