Out of intrest considering the likes of Gerrard, Lamaprd and Fabergas are on in and around 130k a week, what would people be happy with the club paying Arteta?

We have a budget, so as much as we can afford.

Better add that, with respect to Mikel, I don't think losing him would really be about money. He's spent a good portion of his career in the sh*tty UK weather and he now has a son, so I can see him having a long think about signing up for another five years.

Two year extension, perhaps...

I'd pay him a pound a second if we could afford it. I hope that's actually a lot or I'll look silly.

£1 a second = £60 a minute = £3600 an hour = £86400 a day = £604,800 a week

I don't think we could afford that :/

It's a difficult one for Mikel. The only way he could improve his chances of getting in the Spain squad is by going to a CL regular and instantly being one of their best players. I think he could do it, but you never know what a manager's going to be like, he could very easily get shunted out wide again and be a bit part player. The thing is, even Fabregas doesn't get in their team and he's Arsenal's best player. I'm convinced there's a slight pro-La Liga bias in the Spain squad. I mean Reina has never been more than third choice keeper. So really the only way for him to get in the squad would be to go back to Spain for one of the big clubs there, Barca and Real wouldn't go for him, so he has very few options. When you look at it like that, he has pretty much zero chance of getting in the squad no matter what he does. He may even have a better chance by dragging Everton into the CL.

There you go then Mikel, I've sorted things out for you, thank me later.

But the man dubbed the ‘Best Little Spaniard’ Evertonians know, stressed he is focusing solely on Saturday’s friendly with Sydney FC. After that, he added, a strong start to the season is imperative.

“It’s been hard for me watching the World Cup. I was so close to getting into the national team before it and I didn’t,” he says. “Even though I respect the terrific players we’ve got it was tough.

“I knew Mr Aragones wanted to give me a chance before my injury, and even before the World Cup I was really close. It was just unlucky.

“I am not ruling myself out for the European Championships. That’s in two years time and I’ll be 30 so that’s the perfect age. I’m going to go for it.

“Now I’m feeling fine. I’ve been training here and we’ve been training hard. It’s important to get in shape.”

Arteta surprised himself with his successful goalscoring return to the Everton side last season and wants to carry on where he left off.

“Obviously when you come back from that type of injury it takes time.

“I didn’t expect to get back to the level I did in such a short period of time. I was surprised.

“I know how much I struggled to get there because of all the problems. I just want to be fit now and forget about the rest.

“It’s too early to talk about targets but we need to be ambitious.

“When we have everyone back, the manager is going to sit down and say ‘listen lads this is what I’m expecting.’ ”

I think even he realises that there is no way he could get in the Spain squad - the players in his way for a starting place (Xavi, Iniesta, Alonso, Busquets) are just too good and mostly play together for Barcelona already (except Xabi obviously), and the up-and-coming players (Mata, Martinez, Fabregas) are quite a bit younger than him. Arteta is a great player, and I dont mean to belittle him, but (for instance) Xavi is a step up from him.

As for the la Liga bias, I think its more because the best Spanish players in most positions do play in la Liga - Reina is a good keeper, but Casillas is probably the best keeper in the world and has been for several years.

I'm sorry. They talked about "England's golden generation".

That midfield there, and Arteta not even capped - is a genuine golden generation.

Certainly not short on talent are Spain. Hence Arteta's just got to be patient. If it wasn't for his knee injury it'd have happened already.

Convinced.
