Ashley Williams

I don't think this is quite fair - Williams may be all over us, Swansea are the sticking point here, and who wants to pay over the odds? Not me.

Definitely don't want to pay over the odds groucho, but apparently £10mill is the new 25p or something. I'm not keen on this signing at all.

The new owners and manager at Swansea probably misjudged the fan reaction on Williams and are now engaged in a bit of posturing to try and limit the damage. It also isn't unusual to move the goalposts late and try to eke out a bit more when the team and player are committed. The odds remain a deal will be done that isn't an awful lot different to the one on the table but with a little bit of unnecessary aggro along the way. It happens. We do it. Football is cut-throat.

Let him stay where he is . They lose £10M and no doubt have to pay him more in wages. We will do the same with Stones if needed but we have a player that will improve and become more valuable.......

why mate?

a proven quality PL defender and the captain of his club. solid, reliable, no bad injury history. has never relied on pace so his legs going ala Distin isn't gonna be an issue. can actually organise a defence and is a natural leader.

it makes perfect sense.

Terms of payment is my guess on whats happening, bigger up front payment, maybe somethign tacked on for appearances, qualifying for europe etc, but when announced the fee will sound better for the Swansea owners

Pretty much this. The vast majority of Swansea supporters are pretty suspicious about the motives of the new Yanks who've taken over and if they were seen to cash out easily on the captain, and pretty much heart of the club, there'd be uproar.

I expect the deal to be done as 'undisclosed' and Swansea leaking a figure of about £15m to the local press, which'll actually be met if we win the Champions League final 8-0.

Fair point Pete, IF we can hold Stones.

Big if at this point I feel.

I think all you people saying we should pay £13 or £20 million for him are absolutely crackers.

Honestly some of you have no common sense when it comes to money. o_O

If a bid came in for 31 year old Baines, how much would it need to be at a minimum for you to be comfortable with him leaving?

why are people so obsessed with re-sale!?

Williams will improve our side. That in turn will lead to more success on the pitch, which in turn allows us to bring better (more valuable players in).

In the short term this is exactly the type of signing we should be making. Maybe 1 or 2 years older than ideal but no issues as he is a defender who right now is in his prime.

In the long term we've got loads of promising youngsters and a coaching team throughout the club, an academy director and DoF who will all work together to breed a system and style that will sustain any success.

He's 32 very soon, he's not as athletic as Distin. He isn't what I was expecting under the new era, he's 32, not a very exciting signing, not even sure he's an upgrade on what we have got.

If he was 28 I still wouldn't want him, even though he's a good solid pro, he ain't going to elevate us to the next level. Which is where we were hoping to go.

spot on Zat, we'd want what, £13-15mil (in the current climate)?

no difference at all.

Williams would improve us and help the youngsters we have improve as well. No brainer for me.

To save having to answer a load of replies.

I don't think he's an upgrade on what we have, who for me were just critically mismanaged.

I'm not in the least bothered about a resale value in Williams, it's Swansea who have an opportunity to get £10M for a player that will be worth nothing in two years.......
