It's a tough one.

Do we look elsewhere, do we up the bid, or do we tell them to take it or leave it.
Take it or leave it I think.

The more sensible ones like @Tubey would be not willing to pay stupid money for a player who will retire in a few years.

See in this thread for examples. People saying lets bid £13 million or more.

Think this will almost certainly end up being 'undisclosed' should it go through, but in all honesty think the absolute highest we'd go would be around £13m.

Like Ij said, if we want him then that's fine by me. He'd improve us. I'm not arsed about the money as it's relatively nothing in the current climate (when clubs are turning down £25m plus add ons for a player like Troy Deeney...)

If the rumour that they want 10m up front and not 8m up front then it just needs to be done imo. If Stones leaves then we have to throw 20/25m at the best defender we can get for that money. The other half of the money can be spent on a brilliant goalkeeper, then our whole defence is sorted and should be brilliant: Williams/Jagielka/Mori/New star CB/New star keeper/Stekelenberg/Baines/Oviedo/Coleman/Galloway/Holgate

Another 30m on another couple of players and our squad should be as good as any in the league.

I'm not sure why people are concerned with the price. Everton are silly rich now. Just get the players in. The days where we would make clubs sing for an extra 250k are long gone.

I think all you people saying we should pay £13 or £20 million for him are absolutely crackers.

Honestly some of you have no common sense when it comes to money. o_O
Can't be arsed reading back, but nobody has said this surely?

I assume this is still on?

We'll just up the bid a bit.

Exactly what I was told last night

Yes mate. They have.

Immediately people started saying pay more.

@Tubey see mate ^^^^

Yeah just to be clear, while I would up our bid for him, I don't want us to be taken to the cleaners - I wouldn't go above, say, £12m for him, otherwise it's getting silly.

I wouldn't even go that far Groucho. Remember the days when players used to go for £3 million? ...

You make it sound simple but I like your positivity. I reckon the blues have one or two of these up their sleeve.

As you know mate - Damo just loves a good exaggeration

I think to pay even £1m for the services of one young man is beyond obscene - the current fees in football are quite simply unbelievable and mind boggling.

That's another debate though.

And I'd agree, £13m - £20m is too much, I wouldn't pay that for AW - not that I said that in the first place anyway.

Centre-backs who we know can do a good job in this league are pretty hard to find, you only have to look at the cash City, Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and the RS have splurged trying to find them. For where we are at the moment, and the fact that rebuilding Martinez's 'defence' is a task that makes the Basilica restoration look like a handyman's job, we need someone like Williams in the short term to make us a more attractive proposition in the future.
