I am surprised people are getting reservations on the fee. We should be clear that Williams is 31 not 32 (will be 32 soon granted).

Football inflation has gone absolutely nuts. In the current marketplace to get a premier league regular, never mind the captain of another side for 10 million is very good business. They were holding out for 25 million last season. Say what you want about him as a player I do think that level of fee can't really be quibbled with.

As for the player, reluctantly I think he fits what we increasingly need, not just want. In an ideal world we would get Rugani & Koulibaly. We may still get the latter. However Stones loos likely to depart, Jagielka is injured and Mori went down with a knock. I am not sure we can start the season with Galloway/Pennington/Holgate.

Williams will do a job for us for 3 years and is quite similar to Jagielka. He will also help the younger players and can play in a back 3 if needed. We will also be signing a captain and a leader which we are a bit short of. We are rightly looking at player to benefit us over the next 5 years and making changes that will benefit the club over a longer term than that but sometimes you do need a short term fix.

I wouldn't say we are heading into a crisis but I said last week if deals weren't done by this week we needed to get twitchy. Fans will start to get worried and the last we want to happen is to have a slow start against poorer teams leading to pressure against the harder fixtures that follow. If Williams comes in it alleviates the pressure on getting Koulibaly. I am sure we will still pursue him, but it's not as critical.

All signings are risky, but Williams is as close as you can get to a lad who can come in against Spurs and deliver a 7 out of 10 performances. Koulibaly may come in and be a 9 out of 10 defender as the season goes on, but he may take time to adjust. Williams gives us that time. If we have to play a 3 he can do that. If he has to play alongside a younger player he can do that.

For me this signing is a big yes. We look short of experience in that area of the pitch and we are a little short. 10 million pounds when you factor in inflation is a very small amount of money to pay for the experience he gives us.

Bear in mind we signed Distin at the age of 32. He was a good player for us until his last season or so.

Distans main attribute was his pace though. Which covered up alot of what he had lost through age. I wouldnt expect us to get more then two seasons out of him.

Still have him think he would be good for that time and whats 10mill now.

Don't know mate, why?

Jags isn't any better than us and Baines was bid for but it didn't happen.

Well you said there's a reason he's never played above swanseas level, like it's down to not being good enough for better, gave you an example of two of ours who never moved but had the ability too. Jags was wanted by Wenger btw.

Have long admired the lad for how he has captained Swansea and also was impressed with the way he led Wales this summer. Would like to see him for a few seasons as a Blue. But apart from us being a bigger club, why would he leave a place where he is a hero?

From Koulibaly to Williams, from Witsel/Carvalho to Idrissa Gueye.

If we supposedly have £100m more than before we're obviously either 1) failing to sign players, 2) failing to give them decent offers or 3) never had £100m more anyway.

PROVE ME WRONG EVERTON.

Also do it this week yeah?
Coming week will be busy for sure. Koeman knows now what he needs, Walsh has had time to get properly innit too.

Soon.

I still think this is holdover paper talk from the Martinez era. Hopefully, we have quiet signings up our sleeve that the Foxes exploited to a championship last year. I am concerned nothing has dropped so far but I am still hopeful. Williams would come in and do a great job dare I say better than any of our boys did last year by a wide margin. At least he can head the ball and protect on corners which we looked dire doing all last year.
