The point is that Moyes made Jagielka captain with a few games to go in the season when he'd already announced he'd leave the club. He had no right to saddle the incoming manager with him. It was not impossible for Martinez to strip him of that armband on arriving, but diplomatically it'd have been unwise. That's how we got lumbered with a captain that should never have been captain.

Martinez could have easily taken the armband off him

Koeman is thinking of selling him FFS

Again though, I don't think there was a better choice for Martinez anyway, outside of maybe Barry and I wouldn't want a, then, loanee as club captain

What he should have done was keep Jags as Captain for 13/14 before passing the mantle onto Barry when he signed full-time in 14/15, or gone with an outside the box choice such as Coleman or Jimmy Mac

Jagielka was imeasurably the best choice when he got the gig and was also the best choice when Martinez first got here (Unless Martinez was prepared to keep Fellaini, which I couldn't see happening as Fellaini didn't fit his "vision")

We hear people have been slagging off our Del.

I have some sympathy with that. Moyes tended to have players who couldn't provide an alternative source of power on the playing side of the club and that got us very low key players on the pitch. Someone like Howard might have been ok out of the Moyes lot, or Barry (although I'm not fussy on GKs being captain and Barry would have at first struggled to impress his authority as the new boy). Martinez had a very high stock in his second summer here and should have moved to make Barry or McCarthy or Coleman as captain.

The "burden" of captaincy of Everton? Lol. They should be queuing round the block to pick that honour up.

Look, Jagielka was not Everton captain class. He just wasn't. The feller couldn't motivate himself never mind others.

It'll be sweet as a nut if we can punt him up to ginger minge as part of another deal.

Agreed and why people keep saying that Stones is England's future captain is beyond me. He's a real talent (and will almost certainly be a permanent fixture for England) but he's a wet blanket. Williams is 10x the captain either of those could ever hope to be.
