Ashley Williams

Go on then

He was an absolutely awful captain. Worst we have ever had. Shirking out of anything that a captain should do. His heart was always at Old Trafford and it showed every second while he was here, bar one tackle on Ronaldo which let's be honest was probably a foul.

That is complete rubish ijjy. He was constantly marshalling the midfield and defence, always talking to them an making sure they were in the correct position when we were being attacked. That is what we desperately needed last season.

I didn't want him in our midfield because of his football ability but it wasn't his football ability that I was saying that Williams could bring to the team.

Oh you've said it's rubbish. So that must be the way it is. It could just be two different opinions?

good article on Williams http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/swansea-city-can-replace-ashley-11692261

What Swansea will struggle to find is someone who has been such a bedrock for the club, taking on the same values from those who had been at the club in worse times and impressing it on newcomers as the new managers and new eras came and went.

When there has been bumpy parts of the rise, Williams hasn't been far away from being key in stabilising. Francesco Guidolin spoke of his important relationship with the captain last season of getting ideas across and players to buy into them.

Lukasz Fabianski mentioned how, after one particularly worrying defeat, Williams was one of the players who spelt out the need to step up regardless of uncertainty of managerial situation at the time.

There are plenty of stories down the years of how he has made it be known in no uncertain terms what was expected as standard at Swansea and would be one of a hardy few who would front up and face the questions after defeats, just as Garry Monk, Alan Tate and Leon Britton would do. Only one is left now.

He has demanded the best and usually delivered it himself – and didn't escape his own wrath when he dropped below it. In a Swansea career that took in two promotions, a Wembley win, European football and a string of historic results, it wasn't often.

Bits in bold are more then important to be honest, someone who sets a standard and lets the players know when they fall below it. Didnt see enough of that the last few seasons.

Yes it is mate.

The financial regs mean it's a necessity.

On the contrary.

When haters see an over priced - old player who may go rapidly down hill ability wise over the next 18 months

- coming in for far too much money they need to speak out. For the good of the club.
With all due respect, I think you may be taking yourself too seriously.

Unless I am mistaken, you know nothing about Ashley Williams as a professional or as a person.
He will shortly be 32 years old and you seem to think that players turn into geriatrics around that age.
The truth is that central defenders are at their very best from about 30 to 36.

For the good of the club, would we prefer that we pay in excess of 40m for a player like Koulibaly who although younger has never played in the premiership or lived in England. That would also be a huge risk, most transfers are.

Youngsters like Galloway, Pennington and Holgate will learn from a player like Williams as they will from Jagielka.

Koeman seems to want to build a team for now, the first think we have to start doing is to stop conceding goals and a player like Williams should help us do that.

I can see us keeping Jags as club captain, and making Williams captain whenever Jags doesn't play, which could be a fair bit seeing as it would appear his hamstrings are gone.

Williams would be a great addition to the team. Jags is constantly getting injured for long spells each season. With stones' future at the club I can see why we are targeting a player like williams. I don't trust the pairing of Funes mori and stones. I'll be happy if we had a rotation of Williams, Stones, Jags, Funes Mori and Galloway. It would be great to send Holgate out on loan.

But your opinions didn't deal with his on pitch organisational skills, just that you don't like him because he 'shirks out of everything a captain should be' whatever that means. I was talking about his on pitch organisation of other players. you made a post about his whole captaincy when I was making an observation between him and Williams's on pitch leadership. On his overall captaincy our opinions may be closer than what you think.

Sorry I just didn't see what you saw. Not once that I recall. He was everything I wouldn't want an Everton captain to be.

Fair enough if you saw otherwise.

Williams I can agree on. He's a warrior. And we don't have any of them.

I liked in the Euros when he injured his shoulder but he wanted to keep going to spur his side on. Most footballers would have just got the stretcher off!

Having said that if it had cost them a goal I'm sure it would have been less popular!

This is exactly how I feel about it. He will be of huge benefit to the club on and off the field.

I'd have given Damo a bit more stick though personally.

My only slight concern with this transfer is, I don't think he's as good as Jagielka so slightly confused why we are buying him. Unless there is an intention to play them together.
