Ashley Williams

We don't want a Gallacticos policy. The club doesn't generate enough to behave like that. We aren't turning into world beaters over night. In my opinion Williams would be great. Exactly what we need at this moment in time if he isn't what we need in 3 years then he will be replaced.

An Arsenal fan has given their view on Williams in the Footy365 mailbox:

Why didn’t Arsenal go after Williams?
Everton signing Ashley Williams for €10 million. And that in a nutshell is why Ronald Koeman is one of the best managers in the world.

Williams is a proven quality Premier League defender who was instrumental in helping Wales reach the European Championship semi final. The Everton defence has resembled The Keystone Cops without the music over the last 2 seasons. Williams coolness will wash away all the f*ckwittery. Critics will snipe at the foolishness of spending €10 million on a 32 year old but fail to mention the ages of the last eight Premier League winning centre halves.

Huth (31) Morgan (32) Terry (35) Cahill (30) Kompany (30) Lescott ( 33) Ferdinand ( 34) Vidic (31) Selling Stones for close to €50 million and replacing with Williams for €10 million is an impressive piece of business.

Koeman has previous in this department after selling Lovren for €20 million and replacing him with the superior Van Djiik for €13 million. Why wasn’t anyone else in for Williams? You can’t tell me he wouldn’t improve an Arsenal defence which now that Mertesacker is out for the rest of the year is one hamstring to the average Gabriel or the knackered Koscielney away from calling upon the never starting talents of Callum Chambers or the untested Rob Holden.

People say Arsenal are one or two players away from being a title winning team which always tickles me. I reckon they need 2 defensive signings and a new goalkeeper before they even begin to address their obvious deficiencies up top. They are ill equipped to mount a serious challenge with that squad.( Wilshire injured again I see.) Wenger needs to pull his finger out quick. How is he attempting to outwit Mourinho, Guardiola, Klopp, Pochettino, Conte, Koeman and Ranieri with that defence? Williams would have been an ideal signing.

I’d be pretty happy if I was an Everton fan this morning. Koeman you crafty [Poor language removed].

Damo you utter skin shedding reptile, what complete tripe you're writing here.

We bought Distin for 6m a full seven years ago for the same age to replace Lescott, did you cry about that too?

Your only concern should be about when your urges consume you and you break into your terrified female neighbours flat you danger to society.

Support Man City or Tranmere NOW.

HAHAHAHAH

Imagine if a back to back mid placed team took Jags for 10m, if Jags was fully fit, in top form and also captained his country to a semi final. We would be gutted and wouldn't view it as a good fee in the slightest.

Think a lot of people are missing the point that 10m is nothing in the world of premier league football.

TV money is up from 5.5bn 13-16 to 8.7bn 16-19, thats up 58%. These fees seem huge, but against the tv revenues its last seasons 6-7m, which is the price you would pay for an average premier league player.

If we get two years of solid performances, that sorts out a back four that has been horrendous for the last 2 seasons, and propels us back into the European places, which in turn allows us to attract players we currently can't, then its money very well spent.

I believe the fee to be £8m rather than the 10 being quoted about.

Whether that changes people's opinions I doubt it, but thought i'd share.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether even if it was £5m or less a large contingent of our fans would be too happy with Williams as an addition.

Since the emergence of this mysterious £100m that we've apparently been promised (where I'm unsure) they see us immediately as top draw.

He's a proven defender in the Premier League, experience and resolute and would almost certainly improve our defensive stability.

It's not the marquee signing we may all desire, nor is it a top signature, but it's a pretty darn good one from what I can see.

Why are people so caught up on his age? Nearly every CB hits their prime around this age. You can't really say Chiellini, Godin, Miranda, Thiago Silva are crap just because they're over 30 can you. I know he's not at their level but age hasn't affected them and neither has it affected him.
