Been flying westjet recently quite a bit, pretty much the same routes as air Canada at far cheaper prices (some really good upgrades) and not much difference in quality.
Airline seat pricing algorithms have complexities beyond human comprehension.

Wendover made a good video on this topic:

Another good one on just how insignificant the income from economy class seats are on legacy carriers margins:

Counterpoint: everyone in economy seats is necessary for legacy carriers to meet their fine margins on scheduled flight. The key takeaway for me was the final statement: if every seat could be business class then airlines would configure long haul flights this way, but they can't; the economy seats are *necessary* to fill the plane.

Much more can be said about this, but 2 more notes: scheduled air carriers take a lot of losses to maintain schedule, and business class seats fill a lot (probably all) of the profit margin; this only looks at long flights and ignores so much of US flying, which is regional connections.

Here in Ausralia we have QANTAS, they used to have a good reputation but that's well gone, I'd only fly with them if it was the last flight out of Gaza...and like most their airlines points are a bigger scam than a Nigerian Prince.
They've recently tried a PR up grade fancy food mostly

Stuff your food just give me a bit of leg room and a seat that you don't have to be a 14 yr old gymnast to get out off

Southwest here in the US used to offer free checked bags (or was the last remaining carrier to offer this) and recently gave up on this (with no small amount of social media outrage). It's all a scam somehow, it seems, and all that matters is safety and cost to fly.

Saw my first 787 last week and it's got a really unusual wingtip design. I think I like it--entire wing seems quite swept compared to recent Boeing designs, but that may be an illusion from the tip itself. It also has a very pronounced taper both on the front and rear of the fuselage, very distinct from the 73x and 77x variants you normally see at an airport.

That's unfortunate to hear. I got to fly Qantas in 2016 and it is still the best experience I've ever had flying. Was on a long haul from LA to Brisbane and also a short domestic flight to Townsville. Both were outstanding. They even served food on the short domestic flight. Blew me away because the US carriers never do that.
