Away record against the 'Big Six'

Reading the article in the Echo about our awful away record against the RS, Mancs, and the London trio do any of you feel that we can work at improving on this under Benitez? I hate how negative our football has been since the advent of the Premier League when playing at these grounds. Before City got their mega bucks we were their bogey team but we're now as poor there as we are at the rest. What can we do to improve on this, is it a case of just going for it like some of the smaller teams may well do? I hate effectively writing off the 18 points available every season, and it's not like we have a particularly brilliant home record against them either in the last two decades. In total Premier League games we have -

Won 9 , drawn 13 out of 59 against Man U. (28 out of 177 points)
Won 9, drawn 22 out of 58 against Spurs. (49 out of 174 points)
Won 10, drawn 14 out of 58 against Gunners. (44 out of 174 points)
Won 10, drawn 24 out of 58 against RS (54 out of 174 points)
Won 12, drawn 19 out of 58 against Chelsea. (55 out of 174 points)
Won 18, drawn 9 out of 48 against City. (63 out of 144 points)

If under Benitez we can apply ourselves properly in these games and not roll on our backs for a tummy tickle then I will feel much more confidence in going forward with a manager that many cannot stomach to see in our dugout. It's early days and the Anfield game will be the litmus test for me. We have to go for it against the RS and this has to be a benchmark for all future performances.
I think what you would have to do is check everyone else's record against these teams on a points per game average and see if it is actually a bad record or not.
For example what is Villa's, Newcastle's & to an extent Spur's record against these teams (i know Spurs are in that list, but against the other clubs)

Also what relevance does it being just PL games have over the stats? Is it relevant what our record was like against these clubs in 1994? in 2002 even?

I'd maybe look at it over the past 5/6 seasons and judge it on that!

I would say its not been great on the basis that at some point (bar Spurs), these clubs have been the standout clubs in the league for a prolonged time!

Those massive away games had no fans at the grounds, a huge point both of you are ignoring. Last season was not a 'normal' season in regards to home or away form and shouldn't be treated as such.
100% this, its very unlikely that result at Anfield happens with fans in the stadium, even if we do get that early goal

I get your point here but we could apply that over any period against the RS, Utd, Arsenal etc and we wouldn't see a 5/6 game period where there was much difference in the last 30 years. Years of poor performances against these teams means we (the fans included) go in to these games hoping for a point at best and this has to rub off on the players and managers. Moyes tried not to lose away from home for his whole tenure rather than trying to actually win. It's the mentality more than anything I'm thinking about. We can look at West Ham, Newcastle or Villa and I agree they won't be much better. But that's not who we want to be emulating. We want to be regularly challenging for Europe and the only way this will happen is winning against some of these teams every season, not once in a blue moon. As for looking at cup games then we can discount the League Cup as we have pretty much the worst record of any top flight team in that competition. FA Cup has see a couple of decent runs (1 win, 1 runners-up, 2 semi finals and 2 Quarter finals in 30 years) but this is hardly outstanding for a team that has our history and fanbase. No doubt our finances over the years have had a huge impact but once we have stability with wages against income then hopefully this will become more stable. Newcastle are probably going to throw another huge spanner in the works but the new ground should generate much needed turnover and lift us in terms of the FFP. Still if Benitez can have us playing half-decent with this squad then who knows what's possible.
