Transfer Rumour Axel Witsel

I see Napoli have only sold 11 season tickets for this season. A club in a bit of a turmoil at the moment so a bit strange if that's his preferred choice.

This may be as cliched as it gets, but I don't want us to be a rich mercenary filled club, I want people who play for the jersey and love turning up to Goodison. We've had so many of those types of players in the recent past, Baines, Cahil etc etc, I think it's important to keep those values as well, as impossible as it may seem.

Think most of us want that, the reality is that 'most' players we will try to sign (and have signed in the past) aren't signing because they are in love with us, or even close to that, it's because we have offered them the best deal for their careers (even the likes of Cahill, Baines etc almost certainly did so originally - wasn't Baines for example a liverpool fan as a lad etc?), the Key for me is to avoid signing out and out mercenaries who will just bounce to the next club soon as there is any interest, dunno if Witsel really comes into that catagory - 3 clubs at 27 isn't extreme - and one of those moves was due to him being hounded out of the Belgium league after that challenge on the polish lad, honestly mate don't think he is a Mercenary as such - just think he is a right royal pain in the arse to deal with and especially so with this as it is almost certainly going to be his last move whilst he's at his peak.

As a club though we have got a great record with getting players - whatever there original reason was for joining to fall in love with us, Baines, Cahill, Howard are all recent examples of that, and one days 'mercenary' can be the next days player who finds himself settled here and doesnt want to leave.

Long as the players who are coming for the money and because its there best offer also are professional and play there best when wearing the shirt, that will do me fine

Based off your other thread regarding spending I don't believe we're going to be buying an entire team in a summer, I guess we need to find players that will buy into the future plans we have. I think the first few signings we make are crucial. If Witzel's playing the mercenary, he may not be our best bet.

Comes down to the quality of the player against the amount of messing around from them in order to sign them, better the quality, then the more messing around your willing to take i guess.

Witsel, like Yarmolenko before him is good, but not good enough for it to drag on indefintitely, not done soon then we should just let him stay at St Petes another year

I agree on this, he's clearly wanted by Koeman but if he's not committed then he shouldn't come.

We've offered more to Zenit and more to him than any others, it's now his choice.
If last season and the Euros has shown us anything it's that a team ethic is the most important thing to have. Yes you need talented players but they've got to fit into a team. Swerving players like Witsel is necessary if you want to do that.
