He's matured fantastically as an actor in my opinion and I couldn't stand him in his early years (most likely as every girl at school was religiously masturbating over him on a daily basis).

He was excellent in Wolf of Wall Street.

That's the thing: he's had plenty of great roles, he just doesn't do them justice. Has no depth or personality, and is not credible as anything other than an actor trying too hard. He lacks the ability to make the audience suspend their disbelief.

Put him against a good actor and see the difference:

vs Daniel Day Lewis in Gangsters of NY
vs Tom Hardy in Revenant
vs Ben Kingsley/Sydow in Shutter Island


or an indirect comparison: his role as someone losing their mind in Shutter Island vs someone like Michael Sheen who played a similar role in Take Shelter. Or someone out in his own in the wild in Revenant compared to Tom Hanks in similar for Castaway.

Such a difference in pure acting chops.

Well just because he's starring against some one better doesn't make him bad. DDL and Kingsley are hardly slouches, and imo (and faded memory) he was pretty decent in GoNY and Shutter Island. Haven't seen the others, but I literally walked out of Castaway as I found it so mind-numbing, so Hanks can't have been that good in it (and I like Hanks). Think Leo (and Hanks) is great in Catch Me if You Can, he was good in The Quick and the Dead (and that was years ago), Wolf of Wall Street as someone else mentioned, Inception etc.

was good in a few 90's roles: Snatch, Seven, 12 Monkeys, Fight Club.

But too many interesting roles where he's just docile the whole way through: Meet Joe Black, Benjamin Button, Interview Vampire, World War Z etc

Love that film, so although I haven't seen it in ages, I can't accept that anyone wasn't amazing in it!!

Had the very same conversation with my brother. He thinks he's better in serious roles. I think he's brilliant in comedies.

Some actors can't play a range of roles which makes them limited actors not bad ones.

I regard the above to be really good at what they do provided they haven't been miscast (Nicolas Cage being the prime example).

Cage is ace in :

Kick Ass
Raising Arizona.
Leaving Las Vegas.

He has no place in this thread.
