Bad starts

It's getting beyond ridiculous. It's almost like we're conceding on purpose.

I guess it's a mix of not being good enough, the players being too nervous, the manager not trusting his players and some rotten apples in the dressing room. Benitez is (well... was) known for organizing a potent defence by maximizing the potential of limited players (by giving them simple & clear instructions). He managed it at Newcastle so you'd expect the same here...

Whatever Benitez may have been known for, he isn't doing his job now.

He's had 6 months to drill specific defensive systems into the players and we are no nearer to looking solid.

He's an awful, outdated coach with diabolical tactics.

It's the managers fault. Sets us up to be passive with glaring holes for other better managers to exploit.

I.e. the wolves match where their manager said in his pre match interview that they were going to exploit the gap between our midfield and defence.

Our inability to defend set pieces is basically negligence.

Negligence, mis management, words I continually use when discussing the (lack of) coaching and set up of Benitez.

Truly dreadful, as far out of his depth as Mike Walker was.

No surprise though after he basically semi retired a few years ago to get his grubby little hands on a fat wedge in China.

….if you concede first in 15 out of 20 games, then it’s highly likely most of our points come from going behind. Hardly something to celebrate.

Ha, ha i think it was you who suggested this manager would get us a record points haul this season & we should all buy ’cushions with his image on to cuddle’.

The complete irony here, is that after pandering to the cult & calling our approach to a Derby match as ‘small club’, Benitez sets us up to play that way in every game, regardless of opposition.
This is a very good point.

The players are coached to sit back in a defensive formation and allow the opposition to have the ball. That's why we start slowly. We only start to perform when we fall behind and the players are forced to ignore the tactics and get on the front foot.

The other clear issue is we can't defend set pieces. So no lead is every going to be comfortable because a simple free kick or corner is a way back for the opposition

We get past this particular problem by having a mobile target man back on the pitch.

We're not building too much through midfield early enough. Gomes is best against a tiring opposition and is the only one I'd trust on the ball in the middle of the pitch to find a forward pass. We get more in the groove of that as the game develops - but it's usually after falling behind.

A punt long or diagonal to Richarlsion and / or DCL allows us to get Doucoure and wide players up in support and put the opposition under from the off until we find our rhythm in midfield. We haven't had that option too much all season though.

In short: the poor starts are not unfathomable, they're a product of circumstance.

On a stadium tour a few years ago with my grandson, Mark Higgins told me they didn't need a warm up before a game in the 80s. Reidy gave them all a tot of whiskey before they went out!

DCL played against Brighton. We had the same issues.
