Baines blocked a ball in pre-season training and re-injured the same ankle he had surgery on in May

Everton left-back Leighton Baines will be out for at least three months after having ankle surgery.

The 30-year-old was injured in training before the season started after returning from an operation on the same ankle.

The England international missed the final two games of last season.

Boss Roberto Martinez said he had a "perfect" pre-season and described the injury as a "disaster".

The club said on Thursday that Baines had "undergone a successful ankle operation" and is set to miss "the next 12 to 14 weeks".

Baines could now miss more than a dozen Premier League matches including the Merseyside derby against Liverpool, as well as five England games.

Roy Hodgson's side face San Marino, Switzerland, Estonia and Lithuania in September and October as part of their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, plus a friendly against France in November.

Now I may be alone on this , but defensively speaking I think Baines form has dipped, many a time his errors positionally has created problems for us , maybe we will look more solid in his absence?

But of course it is a big loss - Oviedo or Galloway?

No brainer for me.

Oviedo Baby's chance to shine.

Has to be Oviedo I feel. Galloway hardly put a foot wrong last week, but he doesn't fit tactically given the full backs are so important to our attack. He will be a cracking CB though, no question.

So he blocked a ball what would have happened if someone had put a foot in looking to harm him. Martinez is right it is a disaster. We got the best from Baines when he had Pienaar in front of him and vice versa. Hopefully they all make it back to full match fitness - it will be a day of sorrow when that left flank is no more and unfortunately we are closer to the end of there partnership there than we are to the beginning.

The original operation can't have been that successful if blocking a football completely knackered it again.
Well, no.

You could have the best possible operation - if you've had an operation it means it's damaged; if it's damaged - it can break again, and it usually does.

It's not like they've superglued everything and it's impossible to break - most of this type of injuries (that need operations I mean) are always recurring.

Yes but if his foot impacting on a ball has ruined it again, how is he going to play professional football on it? Unless it hit him at a very awkward angle with a lot of force I can't see how it can hold up to the strains of a pro footballer week in week out.
