I was really hoping to check on this thread and see that it was not your owl. I feel terrible for you and your wife, and I am here to help in any way I can.

They're beautiful animals with feathers as soft as silk. Each year when visiting relatives in Folkestone, I pop down to the shopping centre of a weekend to donate to a local owl sanctuary that brings along a number of beautiful specimens that they allow you to handle. I was amazed to learn that unlike other birds, once in captivity for treatment/recuperation, they cannot be released.
I shall keep abreast of this thread to check on developments.

Just go to sleep. We're all here for you, and we'll all continue to be here for you. I lost my Savannah cat which I loved with all my heart to unforeseen circumstances. I can feel your pain for a sudden and unsuspected loss.
Just go to bed, wake up tomorrow and the next day and allow the healing to begin. It's absolutely horrific and inhumane but you need to be strong for your wife and for yourself.
