Basketballs lack of popularity in the UK relative to the rest of Europe

Anyone got any suggestions as to why it's quite popular in lots of other major European countries but is seemingly completely under the radar in the UK ?

The games in Europe are like football matches, insane atmospheres etc



Seems weird that the UK has never taken to it given that we are very influenced by american pop culture, more so than the likes of Spain, Greece, France etc where basketball is quite popular.
 
That doesn't really explain why its not popular here but popular in other major European countries.

Match in the video looks like a blast to be at, better atmosphere than anything in Prem League although a closed arena will prob help with that.
 
We've invented loads of brilliant games to play in the uk - its our one great achievement unless you want to include the steam engine and industrial revolution.

The yanks get a game like netball and dumb it down to make it easy to play for simpletons eg - have a backboard to help you, let you move with the ball rather than think and move off the ball etc. The yanks also necessarily excel at marketing and glitz because otherwise their ideas of what a good game is wouldn't hold water. The rest of the world know no better so fall for it. We are more like the jedi avoiding their mind tricks (this is waining) and we have better more challenging games.

How is basketball a dumbed down version of netball ? That’s a bizarre take as is the assumption that off the ball movement doesn’t happen.
 
Cultural, smaller population vs many more choices for interest, and theres the whole snooty towards 'US netball' attitude. The US still playing a world series of baseball vs Mexico? How many of those games happening in Berlin or Paris or Madrid?

Like I said ... a target to help you score because the yanks gotta see big numbers like a kid has to see colourful sweets ... easier to move with the ball than to think where you need to move off the ball. I've played both, basketball is more exercise, netball far more challenging.

Also the skirts are a distraction.

I mean, the English language is a pretty fair achievement. Shakespeare ain't gonna need anyone stepping up to bat for him...

And I for one am all in for the glitz and glam of the cheerleaders...
