Beer, revisited

I'd avoid Beerhawk personally. They are owned by InBev so not independent at all, but pretend to be.

Breweries such as Cloudwater, Deya etc are streets ahead of supermarket stuff (I think) whereas Beerhawk effectively is a supermarket.

I tend to use them when/if they carry stock that is like rocking horse [Poor language removed].

Its annoying once the big corps move in, case and point being Beavertown. Glorious beer but philosophical choice. Similar to Brewdog but in a different way - though I'll admit to still being a fan of Brewdog.

Going to have a go at brewing my own beer after a long break of almost 15 years........back to the beginning again so have a starter kit.
here's hoping.....

I was quite into it a couple of years ago, but if I'm honest it got to be too time-consuming so I lost motivation. Used the brew-in-the-bag technique which is like an accelerated all grain process. No question you can brew good ale nowadays though and great ale if you're serious. Was brewing 5, 6 out of 10 immediately and knocked out the occasional 8/10 once I knew what I was doing.
Used to find the bottling day to be the major ballache. The alternative, to keg it, requires an initial outlay but is far easier. Only problem is it tanks the liver - you've basically got 40 pints of fine real ale sitting in your kitchen on tap.

Home Bargains, 89 pence, very nice as always.

Can get some great buys in Home Bargain. I got a shedload of Oakham JHB and Inferno for £1 a bottle. Spent about £40 on a dozen fancier beers from a local specialist shop so picking them up helps balance the cost out.

Funny enough, after posting about a random cat attack from my youth in the Cats thread, I have just opened a bottle of Wildcat, from Cairngorm brewery. An amber ale, and very nice too. Unlike that nasty cat.

My friend was driving back from Arizona and brought me some samples from a few places. I haven't tried too many so far. Anyone recognize any of these?

But one of our local microbrews does some really nice beer. Harrisonburger is a very nice, clean, simple Pilsner; it is excellent on a warm day. They also teamed up with a local Korean Food Truck and made a Lime/Ginger/Shiso Gose (called "Get SSAM") and it is fabulous...not bitingly acidic like most Goses. Rather mellow, like a lime-ginger soda. Really really nice in a different way:
