2020/21 Ben Godfrey

.....I noticed little differences in our play that I think we’re down to having him in central defence: the keeper taking free kicks out wide in the middle of our half; the keeper launching the ball from our area and Mina/Godfrey immediately sprinting upfield: not nearly as much deep possession play.

For those who saw him as full back & support CB behind Holgate in the queue, you will soon get used to him being our first choice CB. The one weakness is that he’s not as aerially strong as Keane or Mina but neither was Kevin Ratcliffe. Whether we sit deep or play a high line, he has the engine to protect the space behind, just shepherding the ball out might not seem significant but if he’s not there then an opposition forward will be.

He’ll need to bed-in but Godfrey is the future at CB, I’ve never had a moments doubt about that.
I see him and Keane as our best centre back pairing

Some of that would've been just tactical against Leeds as well.

...I’ve never been Keane’s biggest fan but I accept he’s been outstanding this season. I fear he’s a bit soft and can get bullied.

I thought Mina was terrific last night, he plays like the game matters, a real leader on the pitch. Mina would be my choice, but I think either is a good foil for Godfrey.

That was tactical from Ancelotti, to get the whole team further up the pitch and stop us being overrun as we were at Goodison. That said, he picked Godfrey for that reason. He is faster than Keane and helped us play that way. When we got deeper in the second half he brought Keane on and moved Godfrey. I believe he will continue to play him at full back most of the time, but I doubt he'll leave him out again. If Digne is playing left back I would play him at right back, as he's better than Holgate.

He will play at full back and center half because he is a good player and can adapt. In 5 years time he will probably be a regular center half, but his adaptability will be important in the short term.

I thought Mina was also terrific last night, also he was the only one shouting at the other lads to wake up with 10 minutes to play
