2020/21 Ben Godfrey

I can't remember this lad making the number of mistakes that others on here seem to have witnessed. Yes i blame him for stepping out on Sunday leaving a tap in but he'll learn from that i.e. don't try and play offside on your six yard line. There are far bigger problems in this team than an occasional lapse (i say occasional because I can't remember many and only Sundays that cost us a goal) by a young defender who has to cope with being moved from right back to centre back to left back then back to centre back. Put some quality next to him at the back (I don't class either mina or keane and certainly not holgate as any kind of quality) then you'll see how good he is.

He was anticipating a cut back and if that had happened then he would have prevented a goal, he made the wrong call, it happens.

The problem in the goal was the player being allowed to get in a position to cross the ball.

Godfrey generally had a very good game.

Allan and Doucoure both were very poor throughout.
Yeah going the wrong way is pretty bad

This thread has not properly addressed how poor that bit of defending was for their goal. Where was he actually going?

The camera angle that's side on makes it look a lot worse than it was. If you look at the angle with a better view of the box, you'll see exactly where he was going. McGoldrick was in yards of space for an easy tap in. Godfrey tried to show the winger the space and then charge in to it last minute. It's what clever defenders do all the time. It was actually a bit mad that the cross was put in to the area that it was. Either the winger telegraphed it, or more likely, panicked and lashed a hopeful ball in.

The real issue was Allan and Doucoure being completely done on the edge. Left Godfrey with two players to pick up in front of him.

It was actually really good defending to let the man tap it into an empty net from 3 yards out is one hell of a take

Defending with hindsight is simple isn't it? Unfortunately he didn't have hindsight, or time, on his side. He had two players to cover and made a decision to attack the one that was wide open. It's not the worst decision in the world.

He chose the lesser threat and was punished. It's a poor one.

Nah he just gambled and it backfired. He basically decided that Keane could deal with the cross across the box and he would deal with the pullback. The ball went through Keane's legs and so he left an open net. It was a really poor decision, but it happens. It's not the end of the world, but there's no point pretending it was anything other than a massive error.

Also, I think everyone should tone down the hype around Ben. We are starting to do what we always do with young players and it's not healthy to lose all perspective and overrate players well beyond their level. He's had a good first season here and has a high ceiling - higher than any of our other centre halves. But he still makes too many basic mistakes like we saw on Sunday. He needs more time and more work, but he can get there over the next couple of years. Let's not pretend he's the greatest defender the club has ever seen. It's not fair on anyone, least of all not the player who has completely unrealistic expectations.

Our players just unfortunately aren't as good as we think they are, or as good as we hope they are.

Can't wait to boo him tomorrow.

Has he even had a good booing yet? It will be the making of him.

Gambling is a good way of summing up that situation. It's about assessing probability and taking a leap. I think you're right about Keane influencing the decision. Keane, Pickford and Digne had some possibility to close the cross/striker. Nobody but Godfrey had the possibility to close McGoldrick. In the end, a scuffed shot/cross slipped through Keanes legs to get to the striker. Honestly, I think he made the right decision given what he had in front of him.

First half wasn't great, second half had great moments of driving us forward but at times was done by Traore. Decent shift
