2022/23 Ben Godfrey

Ben won’t get bullied by opposition. Being aggressive and has the pace to recover are his strength.
Aye, and it's an advantage to be able to bring on Mike as we did yesterday to close out a game and shift God into the centre - so long as the result is going in our favour.

Myko just hasn’t shown to me that he has any traits that stand out apart from maybe the occasional strike (when he actually gets into attacking positions which is never). His attacking awareness is bad. He isn’t very athletic and has started to become inconsistent on the defensive side.

Godfrey has game changing athleticism which is at least something we can use. Sorry Myko nothing personal. Get better kid

Don’t think a lot of people understand how quick he is.

I know it’s all hindsight but that break against the RS having him would have really helped.

Dunno if anyone remembers the team mate questions where iwobi said Gordon was the quickest in the team and Godfrey didn’t hesitate to reply.

In the euphoria of that unexpected point at the death last night, we really cannot draw a veil over how gormlessly stupid we were to give away that penalty having equalised.

This kind of brainless idiocy will do for us. Godfrey and Iwobi are the biggest culprits, but by no means alone. Doucoure was at it at Forest - and it cost us the win. We've seen Pickford do some crazy things in the past too. And let's not even mention Gueye.

With that many Keystone Cops in the side, we really need somebody to reliably score at the other end. Enter Simms?

….as somebody who’s supported him since his arrival, I thought Godfrey was poor last night. His lack of quality in possession is alarming & is in a different stratosphere to the likes of Leighton Baines.

The risk is him giving the ball away upfield and teams springing on us after a ‘turn-over’. LB is a bit of a mess at the moment.

He was absolutely dreadful off the ball and even worse on it. From showing great potential under Ancelotti he looks every bit a player who simply doesn't have any football ability at all.

Absolutely spot on. It's the reason why we are where we are because there isn't a game where we don't do just absolutely mindless stuff. Godfrey and Iwobi were absolutely appalling last night. Fortunately Coleman and Tarkowski were bang at it, Keane was solid but then done his usual brain fart moment with a dreadful clearance plus missed a sitter.

Godfrey is not a LB. He's not a CB or RB either. In fact, he's not a football player.

I know that's somewhat tongue in cheek but I'm not sure what his best position is (if not CB) - he's tall, strong, athletic and combative but not a great passer of the ball so I think of him as an old style (mid 80's/90's) centre back. However, in 2023, we see CB's playing the ball out from the back and making cross-field passes and I just haven't seen that yet in Godfrey. There's still plenty of time and Dyche may have plans for him but I need to see more. TBH when he arrived I thought he'd be first choice CB by now.

I feel he has use as a squad player. I always get the feeling he is going to take out a player when he is being attacked so i cant see him being a permanent starter over the next few seasons

This is what happens when you sign a young lad that has already hit his peak. He would of stood out for his speed, Strength, Determination, as a young kid.
His actual 'Football Ability' has never stood out, and it's not something you can suddenly get. You either have it or you don't..
We signed an athlete not a football player so there is only certain strengths you can build on.

I do like the lad but why do you think he has never actually found a set position, he is basically a stop gap to fill a position when needed.
He will give it his all, but he is what he is.

It looks to me like he's been taught how to play football by a rugby league dad...
