He never seemed like a planned signing.

Holgate, that was POTY the previous season, got an ankle injury just after the season started. The same happened with a young Branthwaite that had shown some promise and was a part of the first team squad. Both of them were out 7-8 weeks.

Which left Carlo with Keane and Mina as the only CD options. Not ideal

If I remember correctly, we had to play Digne as CD against West Ham in the league cup.

Godfrey was young, had experience from the league and was available. Everton were desperate. The problem was that the need for a new defender happened a month after the club had spent all their money on Alan, James and Doucoure.

How is it harsh? He'll be 27, players don't generally improve at that age. Doesn't mean he can't be a useful player somewhere, but he's not a PL centerback.

Genuinely he never was. Holgate had positional awareness but...something missing. Godfrey was an athlete but an awful footballer. You can more or less "mask" that by being a freak of nature but COVID and injuries kept that from happening. Look at our CBs throughout the years tho, why on EARTH was he even signed?

Don't remember him making too many errors that cost us ala Young !.
Injury at the start of the season was awful bad luck, but if this keeps the Powers to be off our backs now,does it ?, then good for both sides .

I'm never going to get over watching him at right-back at Goodison against Newcastle where they beat us 1-4 - he ran around a lot watching the ball and not much else.

I like him, too.

He has a special status in our house, as my son broke his leg playing football the same week Godfrey did.

It gave him hope and built his confidence to follow Godfrey's progress, making it back to fitness and getting out there playing football again.
