Holgate, that was POTY the previous season, got an ankle injury just after the season started. The same happened with a young Branthwaite that had shown some promise and was a part of the first team squad. Both of them were out 7-8 weeks.

Which left Carlo with Keane and Mina as the only CD options. Not ideal

If I remember correctly, we had to play Digne as CD against West Ham in the league cup.

Godfrey was young, had experience from the league and was available. Everton were desperate. The problem was that the need for a new defender happened a month after the club had spent all their money on Alan, James and Doucoure.
