2018/19 Bernard

Lookman doesn’t come close to the skill of the little Brazilian maestro

Dunno, he's not far off.

In terms of his all round game, Bernard is better, and I was really impressed with him the other day.

I'm pretty sure Lookman will start on Wednesday, and probably against Watford too. Now's the time we have to use the squad a bit.

I think the question on Wednesday is actually whether Bernard will start. Not because he isn't playing well, but he did 90 the other day. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Lookman - Sigurdsson - Richarlison - behind one of Tosun/DCL against the barcodes.

I think/hope that's what we'll see as well

What match were you watching? He did close to nothing after coming on.

He was good. His first run was straight through the heart of the midfield and set up either Bernard or Gylfi for a shot, having taken on 4 players.

He didn't run at them again which was a shame, but he did get on the ball and look to make things happen with some quick, sharp passing into feet on the edge of the box, and was inches away from getting on the end of that Coleman cut-back.

He also made a brilliant recovery run and challenge to stop Firmino getting through.

So yeh, he played well. He wasn't awesome, but he came on and made an impact. People tend to go overboard but ultimately there's a few who are going too far the other way now as well.

He's waited for his time and whenever he's come on recently, he's done well. He'll start tomorrow, I'm pretty sure, and hopefully has a good game.

Think he needs to be given a bit more than half a season before we can properly judge him, to be honest. Personally, I think he's a little cracker who will cause many problems for a lot of teams we play and, at times, will frustrate our own fans.
I've been reading a few match reports on line trying to find one where the posters are reasonable and non-biased (a much more difficult task than you would imagine). I came across the Guardian, which was probably 80/20 RS posters as you would expect, but for some reason almost devoid of the usual trolls that spoil these sites.

I was surprised at the number of RS fans who were more than complimentary of us, in particular the technical ability of our midfield. One said that we had the second best technical midfield in the league after Chelsea, and lots were pointing out how comfortable on the ball our players are now. Bernard, along with Gomes and Siggy in particular, got loads of mentions. There were actually comments along the lines of they don't have a player like Siggy now that Coutinho has gone, somebody who can both see and execute that defence splitting pass he so often does for Walcott. The general consensus was that we were probably the best team they have played this season, and certainly the one that has caused them the most problems defensively.

The point I am making is that Silva and Brands have come an awful long way in such a short time. All the new players have settled in and players like Gana, Siggy and Keane have been given a new lease of life. But this is still very much a team and a system in it's early development. Bernard is a big part of that. All this talk about his size are nonsense. He can be our Juninho, our Silva or our Zola. He is streets ahead of Lookman at the moment, as is Walcott who adds a completely different type of threat and a variety to our attack.

Bernard will only get better as he gets used to the pace and ferocity of our league, and I'm looking forward to him building up a relationship with Digne to rival the one Baines had with Pienaar. The stand out thing for me is his attitude and his work rate. So many times you see these skilful players come with baggage, and Bernard, indeed all of our new players, don't appear to have any.

Lookman is very much one for the future and his time will come, probably tomorrow night against Newcastle. After the shift they put in Sunday, both Bernard and Walcott need a rest.

Lol not sure if serious, trolling or just blind ? You only have to look at the match thread when he came on to see the comments about how he had instant impact. Literally the first thing he did was get the ball, go past a couple players then dribble through the middle of their midfield opening up a ton of space. Then within a couple minutes of that he was doing some very direct and precise passing in dangerous areas. He instantly looked a danger hence why he got name dropped in the commentary twice by Carragher for making a noticeable difference.

I think you need to start paying a bit more attention to matches...

And I think you need to understand that all that glitters is not gold.

Hes still yet to do ANYTHING of any substance in a game, an assist, a goal, ANYTHING.

Apart from that time he got an assist which led to a goal which won us a match. What the hell is up with GOT posters memories ? Ive smoked weed everyday for twenty years and can even remember this stuff.

Anyway there’s too much obsession with stats, he’s looked good every time he’s come on and that was the case again today,

I barely remember yesterday.

30 years here.

1 premier league goal and 1 premier league assist in 23 months at the club.

Goals win games.

The same point goes for Bernard. We need our wide men scoring goals. We can't have just Richarlison and Siguurdson scoring.

I like how you chose to write 23 months at the club as if he’s started every game during that time and not been loaned out for half a season... also ignoring that football isn’t even played for multiple months per year.

Stop expecting lots of goals and assists from someone who averages 10 minutes per match and has only started playing for Everton again regularly within the past couple or so months.

Every time he’s come on recently he’s looked decent, created chances, there is a decent chance he will score goals and assists if he’s given a sustained run in the side. Maybe not world beater level but I’d seriously doubt someones judgement on football if they can’t see he has obvious potential. He’s stil only 21...

In Germany, Lookman had a better goal or assist per minute ratio than Aubamyang and Thomas Muller.

Yes, it’s a different league, but he simply hasn’t played the minutes this season to make any reasonable argument that he doesn’t score or assist enough.

I’d like to see him have a run of a few games, which I’m sure will happen over the Xmas period.
