Also, I think it should set the tone of the song. It's the reason I posted 'heard it through the grapevine' that slow deep bassy sound is so ominous. The bass/piano like a heart beat and the tambourine is frantic. It's like a man angry trying to control himself.

Everybody has one song pertinent to a moment in their lives. This is mine and even after fifty years hearing the opening bass rhythms I'm still whisked back to a situation that the lyrics portray.
