An interesting diversion from another thread - a poster highlights issues of bigotry in football. Looks a fair set of points to me (note edited slightly):

Fair critique? What can we, as a football community, do about it?
It'll take time mate. In 3/4 generations hopefully bigotry will be mostly grained out and relegated to the history books.

At this point, I think there's still too many old traditions and views from the older generations being passed down, but it does look like the views of the majority of the younger generations are changing.

Hopefully the pendulum will swing in the opposite direction this time Tommy mate.

But unless we can figure out interstellar space travel and how to terraform other planets, I reckon racism will be the least of their worries in 3/4 generations time. Thank god we won't be around to see it! 😳

Then we can have interplanetary racism and bigotry.

I think that's a bit pessimistic. There's no doubt in my mind that there has been a noticeable shift in cultural attitudes the last few years but of course the idiots just shout louder in the face of their 'persecution'. There are still plenty with entrenched racist or homophobic views but there's been a large swell in the number of people who are willing to directly challenge it which was something of a rarity a couple of generations back.

In the long run 50 years isn't a great deal of time for societal attitudes to change dramatically - it's noticeable how rattled the 'wokes' have certain elements of society and how many are clinging to the 90's or even the early 2000's as a time to look back on and reflect that "You couldn't get away with that these days..."

Looks that way doesn't it.

Then again, I get the feeling that bigotry, racism and prejudice is a normal human condition about the globe, sadly. Its easy to think that it's uniquely here in the uk, but, despite me knocking the uk for many things, I think that here must be one of the better safer places on earth for minorities, although there us clearly some considerable improvement yet to be made.

How though?

Remember that positive discrimination is still discrimination and therefore a bad thing - and it causes division.

Firstly it’s disgusting and well done for walking off the pitch but tribalism is a problem . The RS defended Suarez to the point of wearing t-shirts but are rightly up in arms about this , Chelsea are outraged by the Fernandez song but have John Terry “leader blah blah “ around the ground . Until we can move passed that I think the problem is going to be tough to tackle .

Historically I know it was much worse because I was there and racist chanting was frankly the norm , people can pretend it wasn’t but it was everywhere . Fortunately it seemed to gradually be pushed to the edges , still there in isolated incidents maybe on coaches and trains but started to disappear . In my opinion the last few years those who think like this feel empowered to let their opinions out in a way they wouldn’t have dared in the recent past . It’s a real worry

The Old Firm fans take great delight in offending each other and everyone else. That's been going on for as long as I remember so it's being handed down from generation to generation in the name of "tradition".
