I spent a good part of an evening with Bill once, back in the '90s. I was at a performance of a rock musical at a small theatre, and Bill happened to come along to check it out for whether it would suit the West End (it didn't, but that's by the by). I was talking to him in the bar before the show, and then by a bizarre coincidence my seat was right next to him! He joked that they were keeping all of the Evertonians together, and we continued to get on well throughout the evening. I don't pretend to know all of the financial ins and outs of his tenure, and it is clear that he didn't have enough money to turn us around, but I will say left that night with a real sense of his genuine love for the club, and a strong respect for the man.

If it's all about money and trophies, then we might as well just give up what makes us different right now. The man has a deep and abiding lifelong love for the club, and I personally think there is something special about having a man like that in the chair. There's no doubt how important Abramovich has been for Chelsea, but it's no surprise that the man they really mourned was Matthew Harding. You can't buy that.

When Bill does go, I will wish him nothing but well. To give him abuse because he hasn't brought trophies just doesn't sit right with me. That's all.
I like this post - chatted to him on a train once on the way to Goodison and he came across as really genuine with his love for the club. In a different less moneyed era him and Moyes might have achieved something special.

You are aware he still owns part of the club and sits on the board? He has a say so which part of being overruled is nonsense? He wanted Moyes back but the rest didn't.

It's the word overruled I have a problem with. It implies that he'd made a decision but was, well, err, overruled.

One thing is for certain, if Bill was still making decisions, then that would mean he wasn't bought out.

In that scenario, we wouldn't have Carlo anyway.

Don't mind him being Chairman, tbh. It's not a position within our structure that carries a great deal of responsibility.
Its nearly only Ceremonial now, he might be able to put his 10cents worth of opinion in but he doesn't have the final say now...I hope.

But back in the day, some of the things he signed off on...or, with Kings Dock... didn't in his case, would have resulted in the real world with the sack.
We could've done worse
But he could've done better

Yeah agree entirely. No way he has a deciding say in anything.

He has always been an actor.

And his biggest role was as Pretend-Chairman overseeing a reduction of Goodison Park, the spectator base
and the introduction of a no-trophy mentality. He never had the money to take over EFC and then he stayed too long.

I do. He’s the most unsuccessful chairman in the history of the club.

W.R. Williams had the role for two seasons, we got relegated and then came 7th in the second division.

Dr David Marsh was chairman from 1991 to 1994. We came 12th, 13th and then almost got relegated on the final day.

And the less said about John Houlding the better...

So it's not really true that he is our most unsuccessful chairman. Sounds good though.

Hi Bill.

He’s been chairman for over two decades and we’ve only managed to finish in the top 4 once and have never won a trophy.

We’ve also finished 17th, 15th, etc during his tenure.

He’s an odious charlatan and the club will be in a much better position when we finally get the pie head out of the club.

Regardless your comments about him being our worst ever chairman are incorrect.

If you know your history and all that?
