Fascinating thread, nice one BT.

Having met the great man I can tell you that his ethnic roots were quite definitely based in the northend of the one eyed city. I had been told that there was some Gypsy stock in him, his mum sold clothes pegs or something.

Who was the first black player on Merseyside?

The earliest blsck lad I can recall played for Tranmere Rovers, a Ghanian international winger, Eddie O'Neilie (?sp) back in the late 50's, I think he signed for Rovers while attending L Uni. Unfortunately he was met by open racism as were many others who followed...................it seemed to be the way of the world at that time I'm ashamed to say. Most black folk got looked on as second class citizens. I was taught a lesson by my dad not long after becoming of drinking age, he drank in the Pelican on the Woodchurch but some of his cronies would leave his comapnty when a guy called Alfie Hall came and sat down. Alfie was a total gent and as black as you can imagine, the so called cronies disliked Alfie because he was married to a white girl. I didn't hear my dad swear that often but he said to me that they could go screw themselves Alfie was his mate and a bloody smashing bloke he was as well. Another old pal of my dads stopped an Indian doctor from examining his wife, dad called him bonkers but that shows how bad things used to be

If that were ever to be proved I'd have the biggest smile on this forum.
