If they were going to give it to a songwriter than a joint award to Cohen and Dylan would have been a good way of honouring the two giants.It's a farce. I very much enjoy Dylan but he didn't deserve the award. If they were to give it to some song artist, than I prefer Leonard Cohen. Lots of his lyrics are able to stand alone. I also consider it somewhat insulting for people who actually write spectacular literature.

Very rare for the literature prize to be shared, but has occurred occasionally in the past.
I'm not a big Dylan fan especially, but it seems like his work was massively accessible which is what made him so influential - he inspired generations to pick up the guitar.
With Cohen it's almost like he inspired people to put down the guitar. Can you imagine fancying yourself as a budding singer songwriter, and famous blue raincoat comes on the radio? You'd be inclined to just admit defeat and go back to the IT job.
