Boss photos you've taken

What about a vapourer moth caterpillar - and friends...?

I found a cat on one of the shrubs today, and took a couple with my 15mm f/4 LAOWA wide angle lens as well as my usual plethora of 60mm Venus photos. And what turned out to be a more fascinating encounter became obvious as I went in closer and closer, eventually 2:1 and with a tube too... It had company...

Paul, thanks for giving us the opportunity to see all these creatures more up close and personal. I really enjoy and I am always at awe with your photography.

I have been checking out the vapourer moth caterpillar and wonder if those are his hairy eyes? And are those mites the friends you are talking about? Or I’m missing some more?

The eyes are seen best in the 6th image, but the hairs covering the head and body are purely for protection. They cause irritation to anything that tries to eat them, and they can make humans itch if you pick them up.

The mites could possibly be eating something even smaller in the body of the caterpillar, though many mites use insects as carriers to get around!

Paul.

Those are some ugly eyes lol

What, can be something smaller than them? That’s so cool. Nature and its wonders.

And this reminded me of an old poem from when I was a kid...

Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em
And little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum
And the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater fleas to go on
While these again have greater still, and greater still, and so on!

Cheers Paul for sharing that poem. Who would have thought a flea would inspire anyone but I really like it. I’m going to have to share it with my daughter once she is back from school. X
