Yes, that’s right. It’s a black rat snake.Is that a Rat Snake?
Where were you hiking?
I find reptiles fascinating but wouldn't want to run into a venomous snake in defensive mode.

It's not that bad, more people drown than get killed by all the animals put together. You are much more likely to encounter a deadly rip tide than a great white.Yep. Gotta be careful swimming in Australian waters. They recommend to never swim on beaches that are not patrolled.
Up north in the tropics, there's not only sharks but also salt water crocodiles. Oh, and the Box Jelly Fish.
Looks quite similar to the red bellied black snake we get in Australia. Those guys are absolutely gorgeous, probably my favouriteYes, that’s right. It’s a black rat snake.

I didn't suggest that sharks are chomping on people every day of the week - only that it does happen & we are advised to be be cautiousIt's not that bad, more people drown than get killed by all the animals put together. You are much more likely to encounter a deadly rip tide than a great white.
I ain't swimming in a river in the NT though
Sorry mate, didn't mean to make it seem like I was having a go at you, it was more aimed at those that seem to think every beach has its own community of sharks waiting to eat us.I didn't suggest that sharks are chomping on people every day of the week - only that it does happen & we are advised to be be cautious
We are warned to not swim alone, not to swim early morning or at dusk. There is a reason why NSW beaches have shark nets & are patrolled by drones & helicopters. As I previously indicated, you could swim 100 times in the Georges River at the back of my place & nothing happen, however bull sharks have been found in there & the signs warn people not to swim. I certainly wouldn't chance it.
In 2021 there were 24 "incidents" involving sharks & people - meaning people were bitten. Three died of their injuries. The bloke attacked at Little Bay was the first to die at a Sydney beach in 60yrs. Stats for 2022 are yet to be released.
You are quite correct, people are more likely to drown than end up on the menu of a Great White. I wouldn't go swimming in the NT or north QLD either!
All Good!Sorry mate, didn't mean to make it seem like I was having a go at you, it was more aimed at those that seem to think every beach has its own community of sharks waiting to eat us.
If only they knew it is the drop bears on the way to the beach that are the real concern
Had a very unlike me outdoor social Sunday down Coniston. Clouds were a bit rough but was boiling hot and rammed all day. Stayed till nearly 10pm.

I`m running there, on Saturday, with my lad - it`s his first race !!
The weather forecast is to be even hotter, which will make things very interesting.
Yeh should be 2-3 degrees higher next weekend. It was really humid even with heavy cloud cover yesterday. Pollen was very high too if you’s have hayfever.
“only doing a 15k” - way too modest !There`s four distances over the weekend, the shorter ones are on Saturday, the marathon and ultra marathon are on Sunday.
They go through the forests and lowland fells, so the forests create sun traps and a shield from the wind.
Fortunately with it being my lads first one, we`re only doing a 15k, which takes us up and around the base of the Old Man.
The heat on Sunday for the longer races, will cause a few problems for the organisers though, as the heat plays havoc with the runners, even the experienced ones.
Do you come across many snakes when you hike?Yes, that’s right. It’s a black rat snake.
