Boxing

He has announced his retirement, a journo posted this, which I think is a decent account of Hatton:

"It isn't there any more". They are the saddest words in boxing - and the sweetest. He has made the right decision to hang his gloves up, safe in the knowledge there is indeed only one Ricky Hatton and there will never be another like him. Journalists who had covered Hatton's career queued up to deliver eulogies at the post-fight news conference, which finished with a round of applause. Hatton might not be the greatest fighter this country has ever produced but he might just be the most loved.

I imagine a lot of boxing fans made money out if that result .

As I've said earlier in the thread as someone whose been to watch him Fight plenty of times my feelings changed after the manny fight as he was clearly ill-prepared and afterwards didn't seem to care. However that was quite moving last night , I don't think a lot of people will be surprised but its still sad and it's clear hatton has a lot of 'issues' .

What happened sheeds?

Finished him with a body shot lad. Was looking for it for 3 or 4 rounds once Hatton slowed.

I think that showed a couple of 'tune up fights' might have helped but it also shows (like so many have said ) you can't abuse your body between fights and hope to maintain 'fight fitness' certainly as you get older. It all just takes its toll on you and it certainly seems that's what happened, it's not like the bloke is known for his punching power .

For me the saddest part wasn't the fight though it was his interview , it shows I suppose the effect a lot if his lifestyle & life experiences has had on him.

Deffo. I said earlier in the thread he should have had at least two fights before he gets in with a fella who's fought for world titles.

Clearly so much of his self-esteem comes from seeing himself as a warrior, which is probably why he made the Senchenko fight, so people couldn't say he was fighting bums.

The saddest part for me was watching it and knowing he was nowhere near being anything like the Hatton of old. Walking straight onto punches, no head movement, tired by round 6 and constantly letting him off the ropes when he had him.

I assumed that we would see a different style from a defensive POV. I thought he'd know there's no way he could box the way he used to at 34 after 3 years out.

It was like watching Gazza for us.

I hope he finds a bit of happiness because no one can take his achievements away.

The last line sums it it up mate, now this is out the way i hope actually deals with his demons instead of finding a crutch to just delay them, in terms of the boxing, well, zero head movement, coming forward in straight lines, and timing so far off it was scary. The fact I felt for him at least goes some way to me not regretting put the bet on him getting stopped that I said I would to a mate that morning, its always the one you dont place that come in!

"Hatton's finest nights, including four world-title triumphs, came under former trainer Billy Graham, and Shannon said: "Billy Graham trained with my father, the late Bob Shannon, at his gym in Salford and we did everything the same - the body bag. They call it the old-school of fighting but the old-school is the best. The best fighters were in the old days anyway."

He went on: "Ricky wanted to go back to those days and that's why he phoned me up to ask me to train him.

"So we've gone back to what used to be good for Ricky. Those days were good for Ricky."

The words of Bob Shannon before the fight. It appears delusion was running right through the Hatton camp.
