Boxing

As a UFC fan myself, this is unfortunately true. I mentioned Matt Hughes to a "UFC fan" the other day and he asked who he was. Matt Hughes would be the equivalent of someone like Roy Jones Jr. or Evander Holyfield in boxing. I had to laugh.

Having said that, a lot of boxing and football "fans" are clueless too.

Channel 5 fights garbage as usual then I take it?
Massive nobhead tho, Hughes

Never really was into boxing until around two years ago, always wondered how my dad could watch it with so much joy, but I am in his place now. Obviously knew all the big fighters before, but started discovering some boxing legends lately and I have to say I am very impressed by some of them. Been reading about it a lot as well and came across few lists of Top 10 greatest boxers of all time. What is really interesting in them is that none of these lists have the same name on top, so I wondered: who do you think is the greatest boxer of all time? I know it's almost impossible to compare people of different eras in anything, especially in sport, but it's a nice little topic to discuss.

Few obvious names are on the top of my list, but I'd say it's between Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali for me. It's just the ease they fought with, the way they did it, it's just beautiful to watch and as a plus, they have some of the best stats and records ever (Marciano is on 49-0, winning 43 by KO which is miles in front of what anyone else did. He is also the only heavyweight champ to ever achieve that.). Ali is just a story for himself, much, much more than just a boxer. Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis and Mike Tyson would be right behind them and then people like George Foreman, Roy Jones Jr., Julio Cesar Chavez, Joe Frazier etc.

if you like fight history and have Kodi installed on anything, in phoenix , add on there are loads of classic fights , ali ect and a few decent documentary films , really good one on the Duran, no mas fight
loads of greats most on your list, some of the fighters in the 20,30.40's have some great stories behind them, records might not look that great but fighting at diffrent weights and the number of fights they had they must have been really tough and skilled boxers

I think I'd have to go for Roy Jones jnr. The Ronaldinho of boxing...

Boxing was one of the most popular sports on earth pre-1950 (was the most popular sport in the US in this era), and a lot of the all time greats come from this time. They also fought each other all the time, not like now, so the boxing cv's of the best are way stronger than current fighters. So you have to be a bit of an historian to talk with any insight on that time - I certainly can't, but I know examples like Harry Greb, say, would be a consensus pick as one of the best, if not the best, middleweight of all time (W 261, L 17  ). Yet there is likely no one living who even saw footage of him fight.

Course there are no rules to how you pick all time greats - if you prefer to just boil it down to to who beats who, regardless of context of the time (I don't), then the modern fighters will always have a big edge with their physicality. A big, skilled heavy like Lennox Lewis could prob deal with anyone from history from this perspective. But no one's putting Lennox at the same level as Louis, Ali etc as he just doesn't have the same level of fights with his contemporaries.
