Braziian Protests Against the World Cup and Corruption

10/11/17 TWAIN CRUSH DAY
Some of you may know my connection to Brazil and why I care about the place. I spent a long time living there, my in laws live there as do many of my friends. I posted a while back about how the FIFA sponsorship deals were screwing over the locals who wont be given the chance to trade near to stadiums as they won't be selling licenced products.

Now things have stepped up a bit. A protest about increses in public transport costs have spriralled into a full blown protest about how the current Givernment is screwing the country. The protests started peacefully but soon got violent after the police pepper sprayed the protesters to disperse them.

The protests are now based on why millions of dollars are being spent on "white elephant" stadiums (at least 3 will not be used regularly and are in areas where football attendances average less than a thousand and another new stadium has been built in the South where they lready have modern stadiums with similar capacities) and the manner in which the residents have been displaced to make way for the construction.

Areas around the Maracana have been bulldozed with locals being forced out of thier homes at gunpoint.

The overall feeling now is that the World Cup is not wanted. Money is being frittered away and embezzled while health and education gets neglected.

I was looking forward to this world cup. I was planning my summer, which relatives I could stay with to follow England and Brazil. Now I feel like I shouldnt even go. The whole set up stinks. FIFA and the Brazilian Government do not have the slightest interest in the local needs . There will be no legacy here just debt and unrest.

Additionally the Government is curently disbanding their version of the district attorney so they can appoint their own investigators into all internal investigations and taking out their versionof the House of Lords meaning changes to the law get less ratification and scrutiny.

The protests are gathering speed, intensity and size. The media are starting to take notice. Due to the inadequate infrastructure, some of the stadiums not being ready and the social unrest it really isn't right for the Cup to be held there.

But of course no one at FIFA will take notice. The contracts are signed, the back handers spent. Watch this space.

Oh and since this was a bit heavy here is some latina poon

The corruption in Brazil seems to be overwhelming, which is frustrating looking in from the outside as this is a country with a large population, vast resources etc. It should be doing much better.

One anecdote-I was speaking with a Brazilian small business owner in March. He said the thing he loves about America is that "everything works." We asked what he meant, we were under the impression that there was some sort of systemic infrastructure issues in Brazil, widespread power outages or something of that nature. His example was "in America, if you wreck your car, you call the insurance agency and it's taken care of within a week at most. In Brazil, it could take months, much haggling and you still may be nowhere." He said that there is little order in Brazil.

More power to the Brazilians!

Last summer.... The UK government organised an unnecessary sports tournament and built expensive sports venues which arguably only drag cash in for mega-corporations. This was set against the backdrop of spending cuts, reduction in public services and decreasing standards of living. What happens? Folk wave flags and gas on about national pride.

Brazil? They go bat****. Good on them.

Globo Tv, the state TV station reported today that England have offered to stage the World Cup if it all goes wrong. Not seen a sniff of this anywhere else and is probably some kind of scare tactic to get those who want the cup to get off their ars3s and counter protest.

Surely too late and even if it wasn't they wouldn't give it to Europe?

Tim Vickery said this too on the BBC World Football podcast.

You know, Colombia were supposed to get the '86 World Cup but due to security and monetary problems, it ended up going to Mexico

I wonder whether FIFA would consider moving the World Cup if this persists?

England could probably manage it at such short notice

I think they would only move it now because of security concerns. No point guving up on the Cup now - the money has been spent/embezzled

Huh, well would sure put that whole "We could host a world cup tomorrow" claim to the test.
