Can we win the league in the near future?

And Sturridge was absolutely crucial to the start of their season, without him they'd have been nowhere. That's why he's been more important of the course of the entire campaign.

Hahahaha Ok lad

Suarez more games more goals more assists

Worse than Damon

Martinez would cringe reading this thread like, it's exactly the kind of mentality he hates.

Everybody laughed at him when Champions League was talked about at the start of the season, and now despite a massive negative net spend we're knocking on the door. I'm not saying we will win the league or even challenge for it but i'm so bored of this whole 'money' argument. He's spoken from day one about finding ways to succeed without a big bank balance and so far it's working.

You can only say that after the season is over

We could lose our next 5 games and end up 7th

Spurs and Utd get a decent managers in and the top 4 will be even harder to break into imo

We don't have the spending power they or any other top side has. Manchester United could finish out the top 4 and still spend over triple what we can spend

yes but without champs league they won't be able to attract top players.....and any players they do get will want huge wages....

if we finish 4th season, we can win it next season......the standard in the premier league is terrible...united won it last year because of van persie....liverpool will win it this year because if Suarez....
if we get champions league, and sign a top striker in the summer, we would have as good a chance as anyone.....

just remember in January, we were neck & neck with Liverpool....then lukaku got injured and it cost us against Liverpool, spurs & Chelsea....had lukaku (or another good striker) been able to play in those games, we'd probably have taken 6 points instead of zero, and be in a fantastic spot right now.....

plus we started the first 3 games (against poor teams) slowly as the players were still adapting to Martinez style of football.....

what's the competition? Chelsea, their manager is afraid his team can't handle pressure, and judging by the weekend they cant........City?, no character, they rely on moments of individual brilliance rather than being a great team....Liverpool?, we dominated them at goodison.....United?, they have to rebuild big time, and without champs league football that will be harder than they think....

This is just straight up delusion. If the current Chelsea, City and Liverpool teams represent 'terrible standards' then we are a million miles off quite frankly because they are miles ahead of us right now. Not just in terms of squad quality but in terms of consistency and spending power.

Quite why you dismiss spending power when the league winners tend to be the biggest spenders is a mystery to me. Liverpool would be an exception to the rule if they were to go on and win it this year but even then, they've spent far more than we can dream of right now. City will nab it anyway so it's a moot point really.

Honestly we have no chance of winning the PL without serious spending on foward players

We will have a fighting chance of winning the league next year if all of the following happens:

  • We either don't qualify for Europe at all, or we go out in the qualifiers.
  • 35 year old Tim Howard has another season as good as this one.
  • 36 year old Sylvain Distin has a better season than this one.
  • John Stones emerges as an international level center half at 20 years old.
  • Ross Barkley starts playing at his best every week, scoring a dozen league goals in the process.
  • We keep Barry, Lukaku and Deulofeu for at least one more year, and the latter two are more consistent than they have been this year.
  • We sign another striker as good as Lukaku to share the burden with him, and at least one other playmaker considerably better than Pienaar has ever been.
  • We sign a center mid capable of at least competing with Barry, McCarthy and Gibson for a place.
  • No one gets sold.
  • No one gets injured.
We need all of them to come off. They won't in a million years. We're quite a good side but we're miles off league champions.

11 points off top in Martinez' first season. Probably unlikely but the optimist in me says that we'll be challenging for the title soon
