Car brands and their appeal: what calls out to you?

Own 2 Toyotas. They're very reliable. They aren't interested in impressing anyone. I've found as I get older my taste in cars has narrowed quite a bit. Still get googly eyes looking at a 911, but I'll never own one. Maybe I'll get wild and buy a Supra as a weekend car when some of the kids leave the nest. But probably not.

2030 ban for new 'only petrol or diesel' cars/vehicles. (UK deal*)

'not up for grabs', 'serious consultation'. Is anyone handy with the spanners like? There's already a very keen classics market that need looking after but with a fair proportion squeezed out of keeping up with the mandate for the green revolution won't your common and every day mechanic end up very specialist?

Not the first job or industry that’s gone the way of the dodo (almost) and won’t be the last either.
Whoever is left doing it will make a decent living off it I suspect though.

no idea what it's like in the UK but for the auto-loving US you can hardly find a good mechanic. our preferred shop has a 2 week wait even for basic repair and maintenance and they're only open 4 days, likely either because they don't have enough mechanics or as a benefit to keep mechanics at their shop (work 4 days and get a 3 day weekend to hunt and fish, etc). you can definitely do well turning a wrench in the US.

My wife always had Suzuki 4WD vehicles then I bought her a Mercedes A Class which was fine until the snow fell half a dozen years ago. She went back to Suzuki but this time a go anywhere Jimny, brilliant little car for any terrain and any weather and she kept this until I had to take her license away then I bought another Jimny for my son to run her around in. A superb little car.
For me I liked the BMW 7 series, then the Jaguar XJ sports for motorways, again until the snow fell then I changed to Range Rover’s. Completely safe, it laughs at snow and deep water. Brilliant motors…..

If it’s such a good car, why do you need a dedicated spares shop mate ?

I can tell you as an owner of VW’s for three decades, that VW parts are infinitely superior to non parts Joey, which is why they’re more expensive.

Everything is better quality, from the metal used, the wiring and all the component parts.
