well technically there was a law brought in a few years ago making it illegal to gender stereotype

but the thinking originally was "boy racers" with a death wish, although ive seen just as many women nearly cause really bad crashes as I have men....and don't get me started on OAP's! they will never be in a crash, but everyone around them will! and they will have caused it
Know that feel...

And I thought it's that, but it's still weird...

I work in insurance, most complaints around price are "well its only a (Insert crap car), you would think I'm driving a Porsche/lambo/Maserati for that price"

in layman's logic that makes sense, better car pay more, however when you factor in

which driver would generally take more care? the one driving a 1994 Austin metro, or a 2017 100k Supercar

also, a lot of your price is based on third party damage, ie, if you permanently disable someone in your car, we are paying millions, whether we have to pay an extra £250 for your Astra, or £30k for your BMW, that's a drop in the ocean compared to the millions in compensation to be paid

I can see the logic but isn't there a contradictory stance that say's if you can only afford to buy an old car then you can least afford to have your insurance rates go up and as such take more care? And if you can afford a Supercar then there's a chance you're filthy rich and the insurance doesn't really come into it. I've seen a much higher percentage of Supercars been driven in a dangerous manner due to the nature of person that kind of motor often appeals to - flash and racey.

Serious question and feel free to plead the fifth !

I used to work for a medium sized firm of personal injury solicitors, which was nothing more than a claims processing factory.

They used to " buy in " claims from insurance companies. I don't know which ones, as I wasn't high enough up the food chain, but it was standard practice and common knowledge.

So sometimes the insurance companies that were paying out on the claims, where the ones selling the claims to the solicitors that were suing their client !

The whole process from start to finish generally was legalised theft. ( not taking about the big serious claims )

doesn't surprise me at all mate, I know a few people as well who were sacked for selling leads to a personal injury firm, but as it wasn't the one the company used they were none to happy

I know exactly what you mean, but when a computer is churning up numbers and reams of data, class doesn't normally come into it

£9k I saw a quote for a 17 year old on a 0.8ltr 3 door hatchback not too long ago, jesus wept

I thought £1k was bad when I started!!

When I got my renewal quote off O2 Drive last month it had gone from £650 to over £1,100. I asked why and got the same response you did.

Changed insurer and I'm now paying slightly less than the year before for the first time in years.
Wait for this one got the same if not better cover from another well known firm with the same insurance underwriter, it shows you what some insurance firm commision base is ! saving £40.00

mate its mad, I was doing quotes for pet insurance the other week, got a quote from RSA for £9 a month, then another quote from Argos, £6 a month for exactly the same cover, features benefits, excess all that, underwritten by.......RSA

so for the awkwardness of them having to pay a broker commission, they charge 33% less?!?!?!?

It wasn't just insurance companies that sold claims, it was everyone involved with cars :

Garages - large and small.
Body shops - large and small.
Hire companies - usually small.
Recovery firms - usually small.

There were lots of snouts in the trough and this deffo contributed to the cost of insurance rising.

The company I worked for had corporate seats at both Goodison and the pit for " entertaining " clients.

I always thought that the cost of insurance would come down tbh, once the PI solicitors had their legs done with the reforms.

I only learnt to drive late on as I'd never needed a car or particularly wanted the hassle. Bought a 2002 Punto 1Ltr off my mate and £1800 was the cheapest I could find for my first year. No convictions (not even a warning or ever nicked), no claims, never been in an accident, settled down and about 32yrs old at the time I think (some time ago). Hardly boy racer material - I even did my pass-plus!

It's no surprise there's so many uninsured drivers out there....which further exacerbates the problem I suppose.

I think it will after a while, but it needs to level out, and have a few years of data to go into the 'rating machines'

something needs to give

catch 22 mate

My insurance quote goes up every year, so I get the lowest quote from others, go back to my insurance co. who match it.

All Governments are stupid.
Rising insurance like this will just mean more uninsured drivers will take a punt. Bit like hiking tobacco prices & wondering why there is so much smuggling ......
