The 1963 team morphed into the 1970 team quite seamlessly over seven pretty good years.

We played in two Cup Finals, winning one of them, reached at least one other semi final in 1969 whilst maintaining a high league position and qualifying for what is now the Europa League in the days when even finishing 4th would not get you in it.

Harry was never at any stage during the 1960s in any danger of losing his job.

So it wasn’t a question of the club being patient with him and “giving him time”.

He hit the ground running in April 1961and we never stopped improving until one fateful week in April 1971 :(
Was that the cup semi final defeat to the Reds? Yes, a dark week, and only made worse later that year when we sold Alan Ball for no good reason. End of an era.

Indeed.

We lost to them on the Saturday at OT after leading at half time....then exited the European Cup on the Wednesday, versus Panathinaikos.

Thanks to the RS we have never graced that competition since.

Bally was sold nine months later and Harry’s golden era was well and truly over :(

Panathanaikos game first then the semi on the Saturday mate. Still bear the scars of those few days!!!! And the ref in Greece was bent ggggrrrrr. Our own fault for missing about 10 chances in the first leg though.

We're 1 on the "things to look out for this weekend" article on The Guardian

1) Everton seem transformed under Ancelotti
Everton face Crystal Palace knowing victory will lift them into seventh and, for 24 hours at least, level on points with Sheffield United. It is a bewildering state of affairs given they have been largely terrible this season but also testament to the job Carlo Ancelotti has done since becoming manager, with the high point undoubtedly being last week’s 3-2 win at Watford. Everton triumphed after going 2-0 down and having lost Fabian Delph to a 71st-minute red card, showing a level of resilience that has been lacking for some time. It is that quality, perhaps more than any other, that the Goodison faithful would like to see on Saturday. SN
