Carlo Ancelotti says he has the green light to invest in his Everton squad this season but does not believe big changes are required to challenge the top four.

After a promising start to Ancelotti’s Goodison reign, Monday’s insipid defeat at Tottenham Hotspur was a reality check, showing how far the club remains from challenging at the top of the Premier League.

The Italian did not disguise his disappointment with what he described as a "lack of spirit and intensity" at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite the financial impact of Covid-19 - Everton staff and players accepted wage deferrals recently - Ancelotti says his board will back him to freshen up the squad this summer, although he believes there is a foundation in place.

“I have assurance from the board that we are going to improve the squad,” said Ancelotti.

“The base of the squad is already there – we have a lot of young players, with a lot of quality, as I mentioned before: Pickford, Holgate, Michael Keane, Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne, Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin. We don’t need (players) for the future, I am sure. I think we are going to improve the squad but without a lot of changes.”

---> no qualms really there with those players. He hasn't included the filth like Davies, Sigurdsson, Iwobi, Tosun etc. Promising.

Why is he bigging up Pickford? Not a great sign that.

He keeps name dropping Michael Keane, and justifiably so on recent performances. So he is going nowhere.

And nor is Pickford either, much more unfortunately.

Maybe invest a small portion of what we'd spend on a new keeper in a top quality GK coach and a sports psychologist (imagine the line outside his office...). Pickford has the tools but has been bang out of form since the world cup.

There might be something in it. I'd imagine they have a sports psychologist if not on the staff then someone as a go-to. Concentration is Pickfords issue, and its a particularly innate ability for a keeper. My guess is that its the sort of fault thats very hard to remedy.

if someone got to Keane and did voodoo and convinced him he was a good footballer maybe they could work on Pickford

Pushing for the top 4 in the next 3 years would constitute a miracle performed by Carlo. More realistic is pushing for the top 6. Seeing Everton make the Champions League is fantasy.
Leicester won the league a few seasons ago. So it’s not impossible.
However Top 4 for us is impossible until we get over the inferiority complex we have at the top 6 sides,

Don't think that's necessarily true, Leicester are currently sitting 4 points clear in 4th and have only managed 2 points away at the 'top 6' sides.

I'm more worried about our inconsistency in our ability to beat the teams who we're favourites to beat. Norwich, Bournemouth and Villa, the current bottom 3, all managed to get wins against us. It isn't just going away to the top 6 sides, we're just crap in general away from home, it took us until the middle of Novemeber to get 3 points away.

Yes, there is an inferiority when we go away to top 6 sides, and we 100% need to be seeing an improvement (which I think we will under Carlo next season), but they're just 6 games in a season - 18 points to play for that not many teams manage to pick up points from. It's not in these games that teams like Leicester are pulling away from us and putting themselves in Champions League contention.

The loses where under Silva. Don’t really think that will happen under Carlo
As you say it’s only 18 points but the mentality change would be huge.
Carlo has a lot of work to do, away form is terrible and even worse in London

This is the big hope for next season, and reason for our fans to not be so ridiculously doom and gloom.

If Carlo is to keep up the point average he's managed this season for the next campaign then we'll finish on about 63 points which would get us challenging the top 6 and back into the Europa League.

The stumbling block was the poor do under Silve for nearly half the season and then untoward injuries.
