I genuinely don't think we have the personnel to do any formation well right now. Every formation requires capable midfield play.

Yep, without putting defender's and attackers in the midfield slots there's nothing that springs to mind.

I'm Surprised he didn't go for broke tbf tonight, shows you that he's trying to keep the squad together and not throwing anyone under the bus.

The last two showings are pretty well indefensible. Defense has played fair all things considered. They are cleaning up all kinds of crap from the midfield blunders. And Richarlison does what great players do, even getting the shat kicked out of him.

I also think this squad is really crying out for a leader. Seamus has been a longtime servant to this club as has his merits, but being captain is not one of them.

Think back to when we came 5th under Martinez in what was a pretty weak league. We had a keeper in far better form than Pickford is now. We arguably had the best full back pairing in the premiership who had both been in PFA team of the year. We had Jagielka Distin and Stones as centreback options. All three with pace, power, and height. In midfield we had Barry who didn’t have much pace but was technically excellent and sat deep, and in front of him we had McCarthy and Barkley two physical, fast, midfielders both with good feet and control. Upfront we had our best premier league striker in our history, flanked by a Belgian international with the other sport rotated between any of Pienaar, Osman, or Deulofeu. That team came 5th jostling with the might of AVB’s Spurs, Moyes’ United, and Pochettino’s Southampton for that spot.

The top sides have all got a lot better since then (Perhaps Arsenal aside). Meanwhile you look through our 11 and player for player not only is it worse it’s far far worse. Coleman is still at right back which is horrifying. Keane and Mina are slow and not a patch on the three we had back then. Not one of our midfielders now could lace the boots of the three we had then and I didn’t even like Barry. Richarlison is a talent no doubt but there’s nothing behind him. We could drop Lukaku back then and still choose from Naismith Mirallas Deulofeu even Jelavic was still on the books. After Richarlison we are into two kids in the striker positions and frankly nothing out wide.

The squad is far far worse than Evertonians think it is. I think Allardyce, Silva in his first season, and Ancelotti have massively over performed with it. It’s a bottom half squad that could easily be in a relegation scrap given how poor it is. Goodison park, Richarlison and decent managers are probably the only reason we haven’t been in a serious one since Koeman left.

This will take Ancelotti a long time to fix. Koeman utterly destroyed us and left us with nothing.
And yet when people told you it was a rubbish squad in the summer you wouldn’t have it at all, and insisted it had been a great summer of recruitment.

Seamus 6 years ago as captain would be spot on, when he's in his prime as a full back. Seamus nowhere near the level he once was makes it a lot harder for him to be captain.

Behind the scenes, trust me he's not only a top captain but an absolute genuine top man and the type of character you'd love the Everton team to be filled with. But from a pure footballing point of view we need someone who is demanding of others on the pitch and I sense Seamus is working really hard atm at just trying to keep himself in the 1st team.

Have we got two decent strikers? Check. Two up top formation.

Have we got any decent wingers? No. Don’t use a formation with wingers.

Have we got two proper full-back? No just the one. Don’t go 4 at the back.

Have we got one RB that can only defend and one that can only attack? Check. Right sided CB and RWB sorted.

Are we still lumbered with number 10’s and also have a midfield duo that get bullied? Check. Stick an attacking mid on to keep their midfielders busy and provide more time for ours.

3-5-1-2

That’s the only formation I like with this squad at the mo.

Sure someone has called you on your maths already but yeah I agree, 352 or 343 for now.

Tbf to the 442 choice, Mina and Sidibe were out initially so we had to play a back 4. But yeah they’re back now so given our midfield and our need to play Richy and DCL, 3 at the back is the way for now.

We had Martinez, Silva, Ancelotti as coaches within a short span of time and despite what everyone says how great each coach was in their previous capacities, we still have the same problems:

- lack of midfield pace
- everyone passes backwards and sideways
- cannot string more than 3 passes before being disposessed
- when the opponents have the ball, we never seem to have the energy and tenacity to win it back

Three different coaches and noone can solve it. Is this an Everton problem?

We seen the same dour play, match after match, season after season.
I cannot recall when Everton outplayed any team over 90 minutes (maybe Man C 4-0).
I have seen many games where Everton had gotten outplayed by opponents.

We are constantly second fiddle BUT Everton is still in mid table season after season.
The league positions doesnt lie but honestly, i do not know how we do it.

While I agree with the points you are making but its harsh to throw Ancelotti in that category already given that he is working with a squad that he has inherited. Since the restart our defense shape has improved we just dont have players in the midfield that are capible of playing at the level that we need them to. If we still have these problems after he has had a change to sign players then there would reason to assume there is an underlying problem of not having the appeal to bring in the needed players or not having the development staff in place to be able to grow players on our own.

I’d be seething if I was him. He knows his rep in the game and how much of a coup it was for us to get him and our players end up giving what, a month and a half of effort before reverting to absolutely phoning it back in once the season re starts.
