2019/20 Carlo Ancelotti

The discussion around 442 vs 433 is a bit too simplistic imo.
Ancelotti favours a sliding transition to 352 whilst attacking (Digne pushed up), and defends quite narrow, or even pulls down a striker in defensive phase when needed.

Whilst 433 has been the go-to tactics for a lot of teams last 10+ years, the trend is now again shifting to 343, which in theory should introduce the same issues as 442 is criticised for (overrun in midfield).

Bottom line, it is all about how you cover and exploit space.
Any formation given the right or wrong players + opposition setup can work wonders, or fail miserably.
At least Ancelotti has shown the ability to adapt in-game, and he still hasnt brought in anyone besides Branthwaite.

Very much agree with all of that.

The key issue for me is that early on, Ancelotti not only continued with Ferguson's 4-4-2, but also his tactic of conceding midfield and going direct to Calvert-Lewin. It wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing football I've ever seen, but it made sense given how poor the squad is.

However, as time has gone on there's been a move back towards passing out from the goalkeeper, which asks a lot more of the limited players that were doing relatively well with less freedom to make mistakes. I don't for a moment believe that someone as accomplished as Ancelotti would sleepwalk into a relegation battle by refusing to readjust if the recent form carried over into next season, but I do feel as though it's going to be very difficult to do anything of note with this crop.

As always, everything is going to hinge on recruitment.

A sliding transition wtf haha

Ancelotti is on record not only with us but over his career saying he wants to have a long term project to build a side.

If we back him as best we can and he can improve the side each window then he'll stay and probably even extend his contract.

Remember as well that Ancelotti was a midfielder. Hes done really well with Holgate, DCL, Richarlison, Digne, Gordon and possibly Kean. Not one midfielder as yet.

I expect he'll be rapidly able to change the team over this and next summer to something competitive towards the top.

Im not expecting too much this coming season.

Nor me but finishing above 10th would be welcome and a good cup run.

Agree slightly but I think our 442 - 352 shift is born out of Digne being a much better attacking option than Coleman currently is. If we get a good RB I doubt we’ll see it much.
