I've been supporting Everton since 1981 and there's never been a higher profile signing than the prospective James capture. The biggest in that time, by my recollection (as I stroke my long, impressive...grey beard) were Tony Cottee in 1988 and Andrei Kanchelskis in 1995. The Gary Lineker and Dave Watson signings had some profile too, but weren't considered anything other than a top club replenishing with potentially top players at the time. The Cottee transfer was high profile because of the size of the fee, Kanchelskis because he was at this peak and clearly something had gone wrong at United. Since then, the hoopla over Big Dunc is about it along with Lukaku coming originally on loan. That's never as thrilling, though, as a permanent capture.
We're (hopefully) signing a superstar. Prepare for some diva behaviour, but also for magic that we haven't seen in 25 years.
"Claus Thomsen, Scott Gemmill, Tom Davies...Tony Hibbert, Tony Hibbert, can you hear me? You boys took a hell of a lot of beatings. A hell of a lot of beatings!"
Now we are (hopefully) about to be treated to a proper technically-brilliant footballer in the finest traditions of our once-great club.
None of this happens without Professor Ancelotti: the true game changer.
Drico.
