2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

He's made Dom better, I'd say Keane's improved (albeit maybe that's one that was due to a tactical tweak). Godfrey has surely improved in the year he's been with us?

He's paid £9m a year. I know we need better players. But it's not like he shouldn't be expected to improve players.

We literally play with no idea how to attack in most of our games, so it's not even just about improving players either.

I can handle it for the last few games of the season, but there's very little to actually build on. We're a moments team who don't create many moments.
You must have been gutted seeing us grind out that win today.

Forts and preyers.

Grinding out 1-0 wins is probably the way forward for this side when James isn't available. George Graham won a few cups that way.
But we've seen this season that it absolutely isn't the way forward.

Hopefully new signings help change that. Those changes have to come from the manager as well though.

haha

Nah I'm well chuffed. I mean, I still think we've cocked up one too many times, but we're away again on Thursday so I have hope.

I said earlier that I can take us being able to do this, it's a good thing. My issue is it's still all we can do. And some of the issues we see aren't just on the players - or your man crush. But people like to absolve Carlo of any blame, so it's a weird one.

I expect our players to be able to pass to each other in home games and I can't not lay some of that blame on the manager. Our away results are fantastic, but the performances are very marginal - it's enough for now like, but it's not really the way to build going forward.

Nar, you have done nothing but rip into Carlo for a while now.

You cry every time we win games.

You can kid all of the people all of the time, but I see you.

Carlo is challenging Liverpool Chelsea and Spurs for a CL spot into May with a team that has Siggurdson Davies Coleman and Keane starting for it most weeks. I don’t know how you can say that whatever he has done ‘absolutely isn’t the way forward’

He’s got results, there’s been progression. Sure people can expect better and want it faster but in my view the progression is undeniable. First manager we’ve had in a long time with any idea of what he’s doing and why he’s doing it.

Thing is, there has been plenty of games where we he has played and we have still just been grinding through the game to grab a result. We just need more options throughout the team tbh, more pace out wide, and another option from midfield so if James is being marked out of a game there is still someone with a bit of creativity in the team.

My frustration comes from the fact we - and he, by proxy - have thrown away points which could see us not only challenging from the outside with a feint hope, but really being in pole position.

I don't think we've seen a progression in how we attack, or how we actually play. So that's what I mean about building moving forward. And like I keep repeating, I can handle it now. My first post in this thread today after the game was actually saying I thought we did okay - bar that 20/30 min spell we always have, in every single game home or away, in the second half where we do f all and ask for trouble.

Fully agree with this and fully back Carlo to get it right if he gets those players - and I think he will.

Doesn't mean I can't be frustrated that our players still don't look like they have a clue how to pass to each other at Goodison Park, or that he keeps thinking Delph needs minutes. But is what it is, and I must hate the bloke.

Did i say all of them? Despite our disasters in the transfer market over the past few years one or two were ok. He hasnt improved calvert lewin technically. He just told him have less touches in front of goal and take them first time like he used to have with inzaghi. Thats very different to asking iwobi to play technically like frank rijkaard.
There's plenty of work to be done. And it will have to come in the transfer market to get rid of to many average players who were brought here.

So you're saying good managers don't improve players?

i don't see what the suggestion is here mate?

I think Carlo Ancelotti can, and should be expected to in some regards, improve our players.

That doesn't mean I expect him to turn Gomes or Delph or Iwobi into world beaters. But I do expect our players to be able to do some simple stuff.

If that means playing the way we do away at home for the last few games of this season, then so be it, and then hopefully new signings mean we can pick it up properly next season.
